Lost the little black one today but the blue one I've been working with for a week now is sitting up better and eating really well. I need her to start using her legs more though. I take her out each day and work with her on standing, maybe that's helping.
I thought it was the heat to start with. It's been horrible here and yes they are a bit over crowded. If the one hadn't started the problem yesterday I would think injury also. I was getting ready to move the pullets in with the other chickens to stop the over crowding problem when the first...
I have 2 14 week only pullets that are currently affected. I found the first one unable to walk but able to move her legs but not use them. However, she gets around as needed and uses her wings to get to the food and water in the hospital cage I've set up. She's bright and alert, but just...
I had this same problem. My husband made me put him down then I read that it was a Vit B deficiency. I was just sick for killing a wonderful rooster needlessly.
Thank you all for your help and well wishes. The rubber patch came off later that night, but I guess the glue sealed the hole still. She has made a full recovery. Is eating, drinking and getting into trouble. I'll reintegrate her back into her coop today. What a lucky little girl she is...
So far the rubber glove piece is doing the trick. She's been drinking and eating some grass I tossed in for her. Still not eating much food, but I'm hoping that will change tomorrow.
Thank you all for your help on this tough situation. I hope you never have to go through it.
I ended up gluing a piece of rubber glove on it. It's really not her beak so much as further back to her waddles. My friend things she'll learn to live with it but I want to give her the chance to heal.
I thought of the denture sealant and that might be a good idea.
I'm going to try a little piece of aluminum. I know, sounds weird, but it's a piece of roof flashing and it forms really easily. I tried to make it as close to the shape of her beak as I could remember. A friend is coming over...
It's just the soft part of the under beak. I tried duct tape, didn't seem to stay on very long. Tried some other tapes but they weren't sticky enough. I hate to cull her, she did survive being hung, I got to give her credit for that and killing her wouldn't be much credit. I'll have to try...
Problem is, it's a hole, not just a cut. So there is nothing to close. I worry that superglue will glue her tongue too. I was thinking of tape with a little inverted piece where the hole was so nothing would stick. I really don't know but appreciate your ideas.
Hi, it's been awhile since I've been on the forum. Life gets busy, but now I have an urgent problem.
My chicken tried to hang herself a couple of days ago. I have a chain in the coop that I used to hand lights on. It's about 3 inches long and I guess a fly got on it or something and the...
Wow, I can't believe my luck. I was just thinking about wanting to find a good bun recipe and couldn't sleep, got up, checked e-mail and there was the BYC newletter with this link. Must be an omen. Making these tomorrow.
I'm still fighting mites. I had an idea and wanted to run it past all of you.
After I clean the coops and spray for the umpteenth time... I was thinking about putting one of those mite tags in each of the nesting boxes. They say you can just put them on your roo but I don't want to pierce...
I added bone neck pillows and casserole holders to my etsy shop this year. I wanted something I could do in the warm indoors.
I can make the pillows out of chicken material if anybody is interested.

I just completely cleaned and disinfected the coop a month ago. I mean total major cleaning. I can't believe this is happening now. GRRR! Worse part, I have 4 coops and about 50 birds.
Thanks for the help.
I was also thinking about getting some play sand and mixing some of the powder in it so they can dust bathe in it. Everything is wet right now, so I'm sure they would jump at a chance to dust bathe in something nice and dry. Do you think this would work?
When I go out to the coop, I come back itching and feeling like something is crawling all over me. It's driving me crazy!!
Then today one of my broodies decided to stop brooding and was scratching herself. I let her out of the broody cage and took her eggs and gave them to my other broody...
What did they tell you to do?
I'm pretty sure I do have Marek's in the flock. I had a roo that got looking really ugly with a twisted neck and that's a symptom too.
How can I build up their resistance?
