    Crowing Hen?

Hey all been a while since I've been through here, quite frankly everything with our girls has been going swimmingly. Of ocurse until today. Our EE has been honking a very loud BAGAAAWWWKF all day. She's been laying for weeks, has never done this before, and there haven't been any boys around...

    Sitting on Eggs

Hey all, our Sweet B is 3 eggs in 3 days, and today she laid in the nestbox! Thing is...two days in a row when she laid the egg she just stayed there basically until I bothered her by trying to sneak a peek at an egg. She wasn't aggressive or anything like that so I don't think that it is...

    Fish Stones for grit?

Hey all, our small flock is thriving and its very exciting. Our 3 infamous Silkies have been confirmed, rather loudly, to be boys. The 4th from that order seems to be pullet. 8 chickens in all...how'd THAT happen? Anyway, we have some leftover aquarium stones, the small blue coated kind...

    Random Broody Question

None of ours are laying yet, which is fine, but we're trying to be prepared with all the knowledge we can. So far, so good. I did have one random thought. If a hen goes broody and I break it, will she ever go broody again? I ask because I think I won't want babies one time but maybe later...

    Wowzers

So I've posted a couple times about our 4 Silkies...12 weeks old now, still rather timid of us, which hurts. Funny how bold they get when worms are invovled! One place they HAVE delivered though, is entertainment. The flock is one BO pullet 15 weeks, those 4 rascals, and a Silkie, EE and...

    Strange and frustrating behavior

Well, our 4 11.5 week old Silkies stil scream bloody murder anytime they see us...rabble rabble rabble Anyway, there's a new behavior happening. All of our chickens(the 4 rascals included) are in a porch that is enclosed by mesh. It seems that they have been eating more and more of the mesh...

    First Crow!

One of our Silkies reared up at 2AM two nights ago and let out some sort of pitiful RAWWRK RAWRK. It scared the other chickens more than anything. Only 11 weeks old!

    Grumpy Silkies

Hey all In our flock we have 4 silkies at 10 weeks of age. They aren't quite living up to the "friendly" billing they had received. They are still very skittish and just don't seem that trustworthy, though they've gotten a good amount of wormies and other goodies from the Evil Hands. I'm...

    Feed Age/ Grit Size

Hey all I had two quickies. At least what I think are quickies First is, we have a bag of layer crumbles that is a good few months old now, been open the whole time. We bought it instead of grower because we're geniuses like that. Anyway, it's never been wet, it's got no mold in it, no bugs...

    Ameracauna or EE?

Got this cutie from the feed store yesterday while getting some things I needed. They said Ameracauna but I'm not sure...is it an EE? 2 weeks old, hard to tell in the pic but the legs are defenitely green.

    Wet Food

So our porch sprung a leak and our grower feed got soaked!!! I obviously moved it but don't know if it's going to be any good now, don't want to lose 3/4 of a 50lb. bag!

    Egg Song Early?

Hey all, our BO pullet is at 9 weeks now, and this morning I could have SWORN I heard her doing the egg song - bok bok bok bok bok bok bok bok bok bok BAGAWK bok bok ...etc etc etc for about a full minute. Now I know it's too early for her to be laying, so what was it about?

1 week old baby with mushy crop..."throwing up"

Our baby baby Silkie has a really mushy crop today, and is "throwing up" when I pick 'em up. Not sure what to do from here...water currently has electrolytes in it, should I switch to water with red apple cider vinegar? Also, a lot of our birds have had explosive poo lately...we're going to...

    Polish baby not eating

Hey all, it's day 2 of our new Pol.ish and new silkie in with the 4 wk old silkies. I did the "rearrange then put the old guys in with the new ones already there method" Not perfect, but manageable. The meanest older silkie is in the big boy box with the 7.5 week old BO pullet (temp coop)...

    Polish baby not eating

It's day two of our new Polish and new Silkie with the 4 wk old Silkies. The Polish is picked on a little less, but is not eating and now is showing signs of weakness. Right now she's in a box within the brooder. The box is near but not directly under the heat lamp. I put the other new baby...

2 new babies - one accepted?

Hey all, brought home a Polish chick and a silkie chick (couple days old) to our brood of four silkies at four weeks of age. The 4 older ones were much more rough to the Polish, and are much more accepting to the Silkie. They grab at the Polish's feet, when they do that I give them a lil bop...

    Am I Polish?

Is this a Polish chick? Also, the site here has two different Polish breeds listed, are those two the same? It says that Polish are very shy, this sorta worries me.

    A random mash of questions

Hey all, the small flock is doing very well, which is great news, but I have some questions... I understand silkies are difficult to sex, but do thety follow the same feathering patterns as most other breeds? We ahve four, and the two largest are feathering the quickest. Are they just...
