Gregg's Eggs
Coop
I have started building, what I think of as a "monster size" coop and run. Its finished dimensions will be 320 sq ft (8' x 40') coop and a 480 sq ft (16' x 30') run. The coop will be divided into 4 equal areas, 1 for each of the 3 breeds of chickens I have, and the 4th area...
I have had my 25 hens for two years now. In that time they have laid year round and i get 1 -2 dozen eggs a day. I am not going to do the math but that is a lot of eggs. Out of all of those eggs, I have only seen maybe 8-10 blood spots. So 4 in one carton is very unlikely.
I would cut him off...
Ive heard of a lot of tricks like......putting a golf ball in the nests, putting a fake egg in them. I have heard of people using porcelain door knobs too.
I don't know what you nesting boxes look like but, it also might help if the nesting boxes have side and a top to them, chickens seem to...
GreggsEggs'
" RECIPE FOR CHICKEN PREDATORS "
1) Take medium to large traps and set them near coop, porch, trash cans, and any where you might find these predator at night.
2) Then place a shallow dish with cat food in each cage.
3) Let set over night....
4) In morning with any gage shot...
You should have about (1)one nesting box for every five(5) hens.
They like privacy when laying eggs, so dividers will give them that.
So, in my humble opinion, yes you should.

Well i have calmed down now?!?!
Not getting any sleep doesn't help dealing with little pecking chicks.
I noticed my chick starter/ grower is only 17%, in the past it was 22% starter/grower. I know when my adult hens don't get enough protein they peck each other, but not nearly as bad though...
I AM AT MY WITS END!!!
I separate a 2nd and 3rd main pecking chick, but yet again one more chicks but was pecked till it showed blood.
They ALL seem to WANT to peck each other. All seem to WANT to peck until blood is drawn. With them acting this way I am a prisoner in my own home I can't leave...
IMO, I have been having a string of bad luck with my batch of chick. Many people in chat can confirm that fact.
My chicks are all a week and three(3)days today.
My newest problem with my RIR chicks now is pecking.
Last night friends came over to see the chicks. I showed them off for a few...
No each hen does not need its own nest..... they will share with out any trouble.
A good number of nests is one(1) for every five(5) hens.
So you would be safe with three(3) nests for your 12 hens.
I know its only a TV show, But did anyone see "House", there was one episode, where A young Hispanic guy with asthma contracted, "Histoplasmosis" from handling chickens during cock fights breathing in the dust and dander created by chickens. The poor guy ended up with gang green and lost a hand...
looking at them and comparing them to how my rir chicks look and by their feathers, Id say rir is less than a week old probably only 3-4 days and the other is about a week old. All of my chicks are one week old and have about as many wing feathers as your EE, I remember my rir's having as few...
I have read in books and on here, that by 3 weeks they can regulate their own temps. i would think by 7 weeks they should be well feathered. Are they?
I did read that you start new chicks off at 95 deg under heat lamps and each week lower the temps by 5 degrees. So at 7 weeks I would think they...
I have no problem boiling eggs laid the same day.....
I fill a pot with cold water 1 inch above eggs, bring water and eggs to a boil, remove from heat and cover for 18 minutes. Rinse in cold water immediately..... if shells stick a little I peal them under cold water.
This works for me 95% of...
