explaination of chick colors for blue slate turkeys

I'm new to turkeys and bought some blue slates and burbon reds for the farm. Hatched out our first turkeys a week ago and I got two different colors of chicks. Black and grey. The hen and tom that produced these chicks were both grey chicks themselves. Anybody have an explanation for the two...

After the damage has been done... frostbite..what to do?

Three nights ago my white leghorn breeder, for some reason, decided to not go into the coop and instead roost in a tree. After 2 nights of not being able to get to him and being in 14 degree weather around the clock, he obviously got frostbite. I finally got him yesterday morning and was able...

Purposely put chickens in vegetable garden?

I kind of assumed they would destroy stuff but I was hoping I was wrong. Ms. K, that is a great idea! I have a couple dozen chicks coming out of the brooder this weekend, and a dozen turkeys too. I might give your idea a try!

Boo.... that's what I thought would happen. Too bad. Thanks!

Purposely put chickens in vegetable garden?

I see this going either way. Birds will eat the bugs I want to spray for but might also eat the veggies and/or kill the plants trying to grow. Has anybody had any experience? Good idea, or disaster waiting to happen?

    GMO irony

Huh? Nobody mentioned hybrids. If you are talking about today's breeds or strains of animals and grains, yes, some are hybrids but all are genetically modified from a (or multiple) common ancestor(s) through mutation and selection over hundreds or thousands of years for traits deemed desirable...

    GMO irony

People are resistant to change and afraid of what they don't know. Seems to be human nature. We had thousands of years to accept the genetically modified corn we now eat, hundreds of years to make pets out of the various breeds of genetically modified dogs, cats, chickens, et. Misinformation...

    Duck egg death problem

Last few incubations, after pips appear, some of the eggs develop this dark blotch and all eggs that develop this look die. I'm thinking that it is the outline of the duck inside, but I'm curious as to what is causing it. [/IMG]

    GMO irony

So if you and I both want to go from city A to city B, you take advantage of modern technology and fly and make the trip in a couple hours while I walk and arrive in a few months, you didn't really get there? You didn't actually make the trip since you flew while I walked? As both the son of a...

    GMO irony

I've been searching a lot of threads on feed, specifically if anybody has found a source of inexpensive feed, and noticed that a lot of discussion goes on about non-GMO feed. Just curious as to why people are afraid of it. And I also find it ironic because every single member on this site has...

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

I am very much still learning, I've only had birds for about 3 years now. I'm sure almost everybody on here can help me more than I can them! I got into hatching en mass by accident. I started off with just a dozen birds that I got as chicks. My young kids loved them and wanted more baby...

is Dumor (dumour) a good feed brand?

Red Herring huh? I'm sticking to just plain poop! :) My birds are cooped up at night but between my property and my neighbor's property, they have about 50 acres to forage on their own during the day. Obviously during winter when bugs are gone and snow is on the ground, they eat a lot more...

is Dumor (dumour) a good feed brand?

I've been feeding dumor for 3 years to chickens, turkeys, and ducks. Every once in a while I get Purina from a local feed store. Never had a problem with either. Poop smells like poop to me, i cant tell the difference. During summer, I go through about 15# of feed a day. I am looking for...

    New to Roosters

I've kind of had the opposite experience. Once you see the discovery channel going in your run, it won't be long before they start being a rooster. I have a number of different setups, a coop with a run which I open during the day that my birds (30+ from this coop) free range all over my...

    Purchasing vs Building?

thanks! that is more of what I was looking for. :) I've priced materials locally, and it will cost ~$1100 . Another ~$100 in paint, ~$150 in various hardware, and I've budgeted another $200 for stuff that I don't know that I need yet. I can buy a used one for ~$850 that all I have to do is...

    Purchasing vs Building?

Yea, you're a little off on what my objective is, and although I really appreciate you taking the time to offer me advice on how to get to where you think I'm going with my operation, the conversation has definitely taken a turn from the reason for starting this thread. I'm going to get another...

    Purchasing vs Building?

I'm not interested in something "cute" from TSC as my birds aren't pets and certainly don't want to drop $3K on a shed. Hence my post about building it myself or purchasing something used. Typically every 25 days I hatch 90+ birds. I want a place where I can put brooders all in one spot and...
