    Chicken plucker

I will be processing my birds next week and bought everything for my husband to make this. My only questions are, what happens to the feathers? Are they going to go flying all over the yard for me to pick up after or do they stay in a generalized area? Also, do you need to have running water...

Why is my rooster in the nest box?

My rooster (5 mo BC Marans) has been doing this also, at least for the last 2 days. He made the same purring sounds, too. I am puzzled!

    Embarassing rooster question...

It took a lot of nerve for me to post this question in the first place and I am SO glad I did. I love reading the replies, and am so glad no one made me feel stupid for asking - teased me, yes, but that was in fun, not to be mean. Thank you!

    Embarassing rooster question...

My rooster is 4mos old and has been trying to mate with my hens heads and backs. Yesterday my son noticed whitish sticky spots on a couple of the hens back...Is this what I think it is?

Rooster - at what age can he mate?

I have a beautiful Black Copper Marans rooster that was hatched on 11/21/09. He is as big now, as most of my hens who were hatched last April, and is bigger than the Ameracauna. I noticed the other day that he has been trying to mount Zoey, our Barred Rock. Is he too young to be starting...

Has anyone used Flubenvet for worms?

I was reading a small article and an ad in a poultry magazine about Flubenvet 1% and it says there is not withdrawal period for eggs. Has anyone tried this? Thanks, Kristy

    Eeewww Gross!

I got the 2 Marans from Harp's Turkeys here in McCleary. He is on BYC. They are laying BIG eggs. They aren't very dark, though, but I don't think the BS eggs are supposed to be as dark as the BC ones. The shape of the egg is lovely. Very round on one end. One of them lays with splotchy...

    Eeewww Gross!

Yes, slimy. Like KY Jelly slimy. They do get oyster shell. I think this was due to stress. I read on some old posts that stress can cause soft shelled eggs. My coop is not new, bit the current way it is set up is. It was very windy and rainy last night and they ended up sleeping on the...

Could she be laying? She doesn't "look" ready!

I have 2 Blue Splash Marans that I got in mid-August. I was told they were 20-ish weeks. One of them started laying the last day of August. She has a nice big cherry red comb & waddles. Her sister still looks young, although her comb and waddles are starting to grow, but they still are pink...

    Coop heat question

UP - Not really sure, yet, but want to be ready just in case. Last year we had 1 instance of 18" of snow, and another with 12". We had some pretty cold days last year and lots of ice. For sure at least 1 month below freezing temps here.

    Coop heat question

I used to raise reptiles, so recognized right away that these were the same that we used for our iguanas. http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/reptile-supplies/heat-bulbs-night-heat-bulbs-ceramic-bulbs/

    Coop heat question

Hello, Has anyone here used ceramic infrared heat bulbs (no light emited) to heat their coops? http://www.shopthecoop.com/chickens/HBL.html How about flat panel wall heaters? http://www.shopthecoop.com/chickens/He.html Both seem like they would work good, and I have found both elsewhere...
