    one hen left

I started with 8 hens five years ago and have lost them individually over this time period from illness, internal laying and one bad incident where a coyote came up to my coop from the woods in daylight when my back was turned and grabbed my little Daisy. Today I lost Kit Kat. Elvie, my...

    The Taste For Denagard

Yes it is terribly bitter. I've added honey, maple syrup, sweet cherry juice and watermelon juice and my hens still avoid it. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

any ideas on what to do next for sick hen...

my 4 yr. old australorp hen had rattled, "wet" breathing about three weeks ago. Put Denagard in water for about a week. Breathing became better. Hen then became a little lethargic, quit eating, lying around, stopped laying. I thought she might be going broody but she then had greenish diarrhea...

    Buffy is gone

Thank-you all, I miss her a lot. She was my favorite.....Why is it that we lose our favorites? ...murphy's law or something??? When I check on the girls at night, I still tell Buffy goodnight too. I am determined to not make any of my four that I have left, my "favorite".... Thank-you all for...

    Buffy is gone

I lost my little Buffy today after a 7 month battle with various problems. I held her in my arms when she passed. She looked me right in the eye as if to say "what's happening mom?"....and then she was gone. I think, if I had known how attached I would have gotten to these little...

    "sort of" impacted crop?

thank-you very much tiki, I will look into the copper sulfate/powdered bluestone. Today the crop no longer feels hard but it is "puffier". I am afraid it has gone sour but no smell from Glory's beak yet. Will call my vet tomorrow for appt. for my baby girl. Thank-you again.

    "sort of" impacted crop?

Hi all...I have a few questions. I have a 2-1/2 year black australorp that had an impacted crop about two weeks ago. I isolated her and gave her only soft/liquid diet for three days, kept her in lower light so she could rest and massaged her crop often. Also gave her olive oil, nutradrench and...

my little Buffy at the bird hospital

Well, I can't hardly believe it but my Buffy is still alive and seems to be on the mend! I fed her with a syringe for 2 weeks and about ten days ago she ate a cut up strawberry by herself-the whole thing! Two days later she ate a worm! She began eating layer crumbles a week ago. Her belly is...

my little Buffy at the bird hospital

Well buffy was in the hospital for three days and she came home with her crop down a bit and without the horrible smell but her belly is bloated and tight and she is still not herself. Took her back to vet after two days and asked if they could drain her belly. They tried but could not get any...

my little Buffy at the bird hospital

My 2 yr. old Buff Orpington, Buffy, started acting funny about 10 days ago. She was not as engaged with the others as usual, she was not eating as much, seemed “depressed’. Her crop was not deflating by morning and finally a bad odor was coming from her beak. I thought maybe “sour crop” from the...

My chicken just died! update about the other chicken

Hi, I don't know what's wrong but i don't think it would hurt to give her water with a little syringe if you can so she doesn't become dehydrated....just a thought....hope she gets better

Buff Orpington just died in my arms

I almost hope it was her heart. I keep going over and over..."did I do something wrong"???? If I did something wrong I can handle it but I don't want to "replay" it with my other girls... soooo wishing i knew exactly what happened....

Buff Orpington just died in my arms

Thank you all. I kind of wish I could distance myself from these girls emotionally but I can't seem to make myself feel less for them. I know this probably sounds silly but I've been that way about animals for as long as I can remember. Thanks again for all your thoughts.

    Molting?

One of my australorps molted heavily last winter...totally bare back and chest. I made a chicken jacket out of flannel. It kept her warmer through the cold months. If you search for "chicken jacket" you will get info on patterns. I used flannel because it kind of stretches so you can get it over...

Buff Orpington just died in my arms

when I was holding her, it was almost like she was falling asleep. I could rouse her by talking to her and very gently shaking her but then she would start to drift off again. She flapped her wings a couple of times like she was struggling and then she was gone. Afterward I was able to look down...
