I definitely think breeding for resistance is a great idea, but how do I even go about that? If my chick is a rooster I can breed my own flock but if not I can't get a roster elsewhere to start because I wouldn't want to expose him. Also I would feel kind of morally wrong breeding chicks knowing...
So after what I'm almost positive was Marek's, I've lost 7 out of 8 of my chicks. I'm now left with 1 chick from that group and two hens. I believe my hens may have been vaccinated and carriers, because I hatched the chicks in my incubator and they didn't show symptoms until a few weeks after I...
They're eating crumbles, and fruit and veggie scraps. Nothing is moldy, the crumbles are kept dry and refilled often and we make sure the scraps they get are in decent shape.
I have two hens, and now seven 9 week old chicks.
The one that is paralyzed has liquid droppings, and I noticed some...
So I'm very new to chickens. This morning I went to go check on my flock (2 hens, 8 chicks who are about 9 weeks old). One chick was dead, one was lying on the ground and seemed to be paralyzed (when I picked him up he pooed on me and it was liquid), and one now seems to be losing control of his...
This was my first time incubating! I started out with 14 eggs, and ended up with 11 healthy eggs by hatch day. 8 hatched between 11/21-11/23, and there are 3 more left in the incubator.
Really well! I ended up removing 3 eggs that were no good from the incubator, and there is one more that looks like it might be bad but I left it. Lots of healthy activity in the other 10 eggs though. We're officially in lockdown now! :)
I am attempting to hatch some silkie eggs for the first time, and I'm all around fairly new to chickens. I ordered 21 eggs, gave 7 to my broody hen and put 14 in the incubator.
My first question is for the chicks under my hen, I will need to put a heater in her nest when they hatch right? I...
I'm incubating for the first time, and I have 14 silkie eggs. Today is day 7 and I candled then for the first time. I'm pretty new to this, but I've done a lot of research and I believe one egg wasn't fertile as I see no development and one looks to have a blood ring. How long should I wait...
Oh that's great to hear! I think I will give her most of the eggs. Anything special I should do to keep the chicks safe and warm after they are born, or will mama take care of all that?
I'm fairly new to chickens and hatching eggs so bare with me!
About a week ago one of my silkie hens went broody (for the first time since I've had her), and has been sitting on a single infertile egg. I wanted to give incubating a go so I bought some silkie eggs online and I'm awaiting their...
