    Laying Behavior?

I am right at the maximum of 8 layers for two nest boxes and it is now rare to look in the nest boxes and not see one or two of the girls in there. If the nest boxes are occupied, can the other girls wait? How long does it take to normally lay an egg? I've found one of the girls in the nest box...

What breed do you want next??????

Chickens are like crayons- I would like EVERY color and type. But can't quite fit them all. I''ll settle for a frizzle anything.

Do you name your chickens and if so how do you choose their names.

I wish I could name mine! Instead I am stuck with a son, who does not take care of them, but insists on naming them. And so I am stuck with names such as Voldemort for our hens.

    Keeping smell down?

I'm also a new northwest member. Prechickens we used to pile fallen leaves in the corner that is now their pen. The leaves are now a thick loam that they love to scratch and nest in. We're thinking that we can keep piling leaves there this fall - should give the chickens entertainment, keep the...

    refrigerate apple cider vinegar?

Below is the recipe for Apple Cider Vinegar provided by DrakeMaiden: For those who may be interested, it is really easy to make your own vinegar. 1. Buy unfiltered, unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar (w/ "mother") 2. Get some fresh or frozen apple juice (you could also use other fruit...

    Normal or unhappy pullet?

I have one 23 week old pullet who is much louder than the rest. When the rest are making sweet little cooing/bwacking sounds while scratching around, she has her head in the air squawking, loudly. I get that she is squawking when she wants to be let out of the pen to free range, but when free...

    Cheaper apple cider vinegar

Seems like most people are using 1-3 tablespoons/gallon of water. I use 1 tablespoon/gallon and that is strong enough to stop the algae.

    Cheaper apple cider vinegar

Quote: Do a search on this forum on ACV or apple cider vinegar and you will find heaps of information. It's usually added to water and helps keep it cleaner, has beneficial micronutrients, and the small pH change from using it seems to be anti-worm(?) or bacterial. You have to use it in...

    Cheaper apple cider vinegar

Quote: I know- it is weird- but the checkstands just have scales and so everything is converted to pounds rather than liquid measurements. I know 1 gallon of water is 8 pounds..... I imagine vinegar is roughly the same.

    Cheaper apple cider vinegar

Our local organic food coop does carry organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar- but at a cost- some $4.60 for maybe a quart. But I looked a little harder and found that they also carried it in bulk at $1.65/pound. (so maybe about 1/3 less). Hoorah!!! So check out the bulk aisles....

    Flavored eggs- new business idea!

I ate one of our eggs today and thought it tasted a little strange.. not quite right, but not really bad either. I'm guessing it is because the girls have been invading our garden and, among other things, eating a lot of dill seeds. I've read from this forum about garlic and onion tainting...

    will our hens ever lay?

I'm with you- 23 weeks old and 7 non-layers representing 4 different breeds. Threatening the stew-pot does not seem to be working.

    High flyers- I give up!

The whole flock has been let loose during the day, after lunch, and cooped at night. However- I'm trying to keep them more contained to keep them near the nest boxes (and to get them used to being contained for when we need a pet sitter). The pen is about 40' x 40'- too big for netting. It's...

    High flyers- I give up!

Our 22 week old pullets have a very nice, large pen fenced to 7'. For the past 3 days I have found 3 girls happily on the other side of the fence, pestering the other, penned, girls to come out. The flyers are EEs and a small australorp. I don't want to clip wings (bad experiences with dog...

How Much to Charge for Eggs in Eugene, Oregon Area?

Can I teach my dog not to want to devour my chicks?

Our experience is that it just takes one mistake and the dog could get most of your chickens. For us, it was a neighbors gate left open and about 10 minutes of inattention on our part. The neighbor dogs killed 5 of our pullets in a heartbeat. Make SURE your chicken run is dog proof.

How old was your hen when she laid her 1st egg?

This is a great thread! I can add one... My black Australorp laid her first brown egg at 17 weeks and has been daily since. I have 2 partridge rocks, a BO, and EE that are going on 21 weeks and still not laid..... I suspect I'll be adding on to the "latest" end of your table.

birds wont stop hanging out around my house

My husband has been doing duty on our deck with a water pistol. Playing chicken shoot as soon as they hop on the deck. We've been working on this for 3 days, and it does actually seem to be working.

    Winter egg laying

I'm new to all this. How does this egg-laying thing work in winter? I've 8 20 week old chickens, of which only one has started laying.... It seems that about the time the rest start laying, they might stop for winter. (Oh, tell me not so!!) ?? Some of my breeds are supposed to be good winter...
