The time has come to cull our roosters. Unfortunately, we are not experienced or set up for processing the birds ourselves. Can anyone recommend a processor or even a private farm that can help us? We don't plan on raising meat birds, so these are all the "oops" birds from our hen flock. I...
....our first eggs!
They are about a month earlier than I was expecting! We got our chicks around March 1 and I wasn't expecting eggs until sometime around Aug 1.
This morning I noticed one of my roosters appears to have several broken toes. The situation does not appear to be impeding his dally life, but it sure looks uncomfortable. He was able to evade capture just fine without flying.
First time chicken owners, so I don't know if this is a reason to...
Thanks all,
The coop is a re-purposed horse stall. It's 12x10 so plenty of room for them to play. My only concern is that since there is no floor and they are directly on the ground, I have spent a lot of time making it predator resistant (hopefully!). There is a 3' "skirt" of wire mesh all...
Well, today was graduation day! I put the finishing touches on the coop and then moved all 33 birds from the brooder to the coop.
Lesson learned....place brooder closer to where the coop is so that you don't have to walk back and forth the 100' from brooder to coop for 33 chickens.
First...

Murray McMurray substituted my BA hens for JG hens but shipped the BA males I ordered.
Can anyone tell my if this chick is a BA or JG? I have heard that the black legs and feet are a telltale trait, but I can't recall for which breed.
I am converting two horse stalls over to the chicken coop and store room. Today I got most of the wood work done. Evenings this week will go towards putting up all the 1/2" hardware cloth on the openings and ceiling. Hang the sliding door and build perches and it will be ready for my chickens to...
If your roof angle is too shallow and you lay the panels running horizontally, you may have issues with the water pooling in the troughs. This may lead to early rust issues.
We are committing two unused horse stalls for the chickens. Both are 12' x 10'. One stall will be the coop and the other will be the store room with the egg boxes being accessible from the store room.
