First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

When I was a kid we used to make a pin hole on either end and blow out the inside, would that work? My hubby already ate ours Beautiful yolk color and he said they were delicious!

I'm actually glad I had boys - I remember what I was like as a teenage girl My youngest boy has actually been a huge help with the coop and run. He's a hard worker and mostly pleasant. Until the teenage attitude rears its ugly head once in awhile! His brother got to go off to college last...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I moved my babies (the 5wk old younger 9 EE's and red leghorns) out to the coop for their first night outside. They've been in the garage with no heat lamp. It was supposed to be about 40F for a low and when I woke up and checked on them, there was frost on the ground and it had gotten down to...

Mine is sort of a half A-frame. It's 8x12. I got it off of craigslist for $200. It was used as a garden shed and I converted it to a coop. I have 16 chickens in it and they have plenty of roost space and 5 nesting boxes. I don't have pics of the rest of the inside, but very roomy!

Is this a pullet or roo??

I can have them where I live, I was just curious what others thought about if they are roosters or not. I'm a newbie. I'll see how it goes, but not opposed to keeping a coupl as long as they behave. Which if I'm right about them, they are the nicest of the bunch!

This is one of the Easter Egger's or Ameracaunas as they had them labeled at the feed store. She is pretty. It's fun to see how much they change over time.

[/IMG] Finally got the run enclosed today! My 3 BO's and 4 Australorps (7 weeks old) will be joined by the 5 EE's and 4 red leghorns (3 weeks old) in a couple of weeks. Excited for them all to be together and see how they do. The big girls are quite tame and have nice temperaments, but we'll...

FINALLY finished the run! Our $200 craigslist coop and the run we built for my 16 girls (well, 13 girls and possible 3 roosters) I would like advice on a top for the run. What works best to keep hawks/eagles/ravens etc out? We get lots of snow in winter so I need something that it won't pile...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I noticed they don't have to push hard at all, as long as they nose it over and get their beak in the corner, it dispenses water. So they aren't actually pushing it straight in. Just watch for lethargy to make sure they aren't dehydrated, but mine sure caught on quick!

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I made the bucket with horizontal nipples for my older chicks and when they moved out to the coop, I decided to leave it in the brooder with the new batch of chicks. At four days old they had figured out how to drink from it! (Probably because they had filled up the other waterer with wood...

Yes, but it takes longer if you don't do it properly the first time ;)   You have quite the nice looking coop and run there.  Thanks! I have 16 chicks now so it will be plenty of room for all of them. I will need to wind proof the inside of the coop before next winter. I'm thinking I will just...

I built these flower boxes for the coop out of the old shutters. I think it's turning out cute Here they are installed. Seems the chicks like their new digs pretty well. Almost done with the run... It has taken way longer than I had anticipated!!! Doesn't it always!

    Easter Egger club!

These are my EE's (and red leghorns) They are cute with chipmunk markings, but seem much more skittish than my BO's and Australorps. We spent a good 5 minutes chasing one around the yard before I could catch it! I like to take them out for some sun time and fresh grass/dirt everyday. I must...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

My 7 big girls, 4 Australorps and 3 Buff Orpingtons (6 weeks old) are moved into the coop and doing great. So my hubby decided we needed 9 more babies! We got 5 Ameracaunas (Easter eggers) and 4 red leghorns. They sure are different in personality from the first batch!!! We chased one around...

We love it out here too! Bend is getting a bit big for our liking but it's home. Be careful with lamps or space heaters. A lady on here lost her coop and had some burned chickens due to a space heater. We are going to finish the run in the beautiful warm weather this weekend! So excited for...

That is awesome you inherited such a great setup! We are somewhat rural Tumalo (5acres) and my babies were in a horse trough for the first 5-6 weeks. We finally got the coop finished and moved them out last weekend. We had below freezing temps Sun and Monday nights and they've survived with no...
