How old is Karl? I love your pictures but I don't know enough to give you feed back. I just found out my BCM is crossed with Welsummer by the looks of the chicks. Are you a breeder?

Ode to Old Hens... Pictures of the Seniors in Our Flock

What a special story! I hope your hubs healed well. Sounds like she is protective, had she mothered hatches? One time I knocked myself out from our large garage barn door, I could have lost my head but instead went flying about 10 foot. When I woke I was surrounded by hens looking at my face. In...

The Hens & Rooler are not related. But note thinking back, the Hens had a brother that had yellow feet, I thought he was killed but wonder if one of those eggs was fertile by him and not the Rooler. We were not happy with him to begin with so nature culled for us and we got Rooler who is suppose...

These are suppose to be 2 out of 3 the parents to the above young pullets and cockerals. The two hens look just alike and are sisters. This is the two lighter pullets, I hope! One looks more like an easter egger and I can't tell if it is another cockeral :( I didn't place any green eggs...

Help! I thought I was hatching out all BCM chicks from my trio of BCM but really unsure what I have. There's two all black pullets and one BCM cockerel, 1 very red cockeral with yellow! Feet and no feathers, 1 reddish pullet?, the only 1 I am not sure if sex and 1 golden and 1 other color...

    New hens and a Rooster

I've had many Roosters and they all seem happy to get new ladies except my oldest Jersey Black. He sticks right by his old girls and ignores the newbies. He did break up a few squabbles and from what I could tell it was more disciplining the elders and blocking them from continuing.

    New hens and a Rooster

You did say you are adding "hens", so how old are they because everyone here is talking chicks except me, (I think). When I did intro new adults members I used a Barrier fence until dark. Then put the new ones in the coop (but not before it's dark, those are the worst fights because they have...

Hay there, the sunflower are wild sunflowers, they are tiny and seriously at about 3-5% sorry to point this out so late. 100% Organic screenings. They are doing great, going into my 5th month. I do give them regular chicken food at about just 5-10%. When I give more they get runny and smelly...

those are adorable babies! I love the attacking the food picture best! Here's my new chicks with their adopted mother, the Mother died before all hatched. It was terribly sad but this Mama lost her first brood because the Roo was shooting blanks! She went broody about 5 days prior and I gave her...

    New hens and a Rooster

It's best to isolate the newbies for 30 days. I made the mistake and am still dealing with a virus that requires meds and isolation of those affected for 5 days. Lost a few to it too and now I can't sell any of them as they're carriers. So much for a rescue operation. It's safer to get...

"Rooler" is all grown up and just became a Dad. I am not a breeder for chicks just adding more dark eggs but would like a critique of this BCM. Also, what do you use on their combs for dryness? Living in Wyoming is hard on them and I notice his looks dry. He also got in a scuffle through the...

    Broody Hen Thread!

After that last huge failed clutch I have a happy follow up! BCM sat on 12 day 10 I threw out 4 with great success. Being dark eggs and new to candling, this is scary! I did not separate her right away, next time I will! The flock kept adding eggs when she would get up, so on day 3-4 I closed...

I couldn't take seeing her blind and crippled any longer so at 12 years and 5 months my hubby did the thing I dreaded. The last couple of nights she had an empty crop, I like to believe we just helped her fly home. RIP Sweet Ginger Mama n Grandma to many a chick.

    Broody Hen Thread!

Sad day, threw all the eggs out as the viable ones died sometime over the weekend. I tried to cool her down by putting her in water, well she stunk from the rotten eggs too. She went right back to the cleaned out nest. I have more eggs, should I give her another shot or is back to back broody to...
