The Blue Chicken Project
Someday, when I have the space, I'd love to breed an ALL-BLUE chicken! I'd like it to have blue (and splash and black) feathers, black/grey skin and bones, turquoise earlobes, blue eggs, and blue or black (?) eyes. I'd also like it to have a single comb and a clean...
Some problems my chickens have had and how I treated them ~
Mini was born with many problems: she was small and pale, and had pasty butt, button navel, and had bits of shell membrane stuck to her. There was a short spike in temperature a few days before hatching which may have caused her...
Welcome to Caitlin's Coop!
About me: I've always loved animals, but don't have any experience with farm animals. I've wanted chickens for years, especially ones that lay blue or dark brown eggs. After chickens I want a miniature goat for milk and cheese!
I got two easter egger hens in the fall...

About my Avatar
I've gotten several questions about my avatar. Here I will answer them. Have another question? Feel free to PM me.
Are those eggs yours? No, but they may be one day! I got pictures of eggs off the web and arranged them.
What breeds are those...
I have 2 cockerels for sale in Seattle - nice blue Ameraucanas. Please post here if you're interested:

I bought 4 chicks from Cree Farms in Washington to hand-raise and can just now tell the sex. (and they are getting a bit big for their bin!) As I cannot keep roosters here in the city, I have 2 cockerels to sell. They are about 3 weeks old.
Both have blue feathering; one is the darkest of the...
That was my addition to Wikipedia that was quoted about the breeds. Those are all I could find about black skin at the feathersite. I'd like to know more about black skin in Sumatra and Rapanui, because I couldn't find specific info about their skin color. Ayam Cemani is bred for meat in SE...
I have 2 EE's that I got as adults from a large flock. One is like my shadow, and I'm afraid she'll get hurt when I'm digging in the yard because she's usually in the hole! She doesn't like being picked up, however, if she had been hand raised she probably would be cuddly since she's very cuddly...
How many small eggs does a new hen lay before they get up to size? My new hen just started laying, she's laid 3 eggs now. They are the cutest little eggs, but I want to know when they'll be regular sized! She's a leghorn, but a very inbred one- she has no tail and has an awful voice.
Thanks. CRD is the closest I can find too, though her eyes ave clear. How early should I expose chicks so they develop immunity to CRD? Would it be better to get a vaccine?
Also, that black-pellets-in-water poo has appeared again. What could be causing it?
No, the tint is wholly genetic. However, if the hen lays less eggs the color can be darker, because there's been a "buildup" of color in her system. Also, as the hen ages, her eggs tend to become lighter. But I've never heard of a way to change the actual tint. I've never heard of the feed...
I've only read about using garlic for yeast infections and ACV for probiotics in the mother. Probiotics will help the general health of the chickens making them more resistant to infection in general, but they don't work directly against worms.
The only supplement I've heard that works...

Do you have more info on this? This doesn't make sense to me and as a person who is lactose intolerant, I would really like to understand. Lastase is an enzyme that cleaves lactose (a disaccharide) into glucose and galactose. If it is in the milk itself, then there wouldn't be any...
some diarrhea is normal in young chicks. Are all the droppings like that, or just some?
I highly doubt your chicks have worms. The poo doesn't look like worms to me.
You can lubricate the vent with vaseline - this got my eggbound hen to lay.
Also, you can give the hen a warm bath - it's supposed to relax the vent muscles so the hen can lay.
Check for things that might be cause eggboundness - in my hen she had lice and vent gleet irritating her vent so it...
