What age did your hens lay their first egg?

Disclaimer: I'm a rookie. However, I bet they'll see the dummy eggs and get the idea. We get most of our eggs by 9 am so if they can't get into the nest until you open it, then you might open it up a little earlier. I was woken up at 6:30 am yesterday by several ladies singing their egg laying song.

How wide should the roost boards be? Cold weather coop.

Thank you so much for the fast replies. We have 2x4s available so I think we'll just go ahead and use those to be on the safe side. We'll use smaller ones out in the attached run. I'll get to add photos of our coop soon. :)

How wide should the roost boards be? Cold weather coop.

I live in Central Ohio and our winters can get below 0. I believe I read somewhere on here that the boards used for the roost should be wide enough to have the chickens completely covering their toes to keep them from getting frostbitten. How wide would you recommend?

What age did your hens lay their first egg?

I was admittedly caught off-guard by them laying eggs so soon. I thought I had another month. Mine didn't start getting oyster shell until a few days after the first few chickens started laying. We've had 2 soft-shelled eggs out of probably 20. Most of them are actually harder than store-bought...

To wash or not to wash eggs?

This forum is so helpful. I decided on my method. When I collect the eggs, I don't wash them. They almost always look very clean (you know, for the two weeks that my chickens have been laying :) ). I keep them in a specific container in my fridge. I feel like I have to wash them before I use...

What age did your hens lay their first egg?

Okay, I got 3 eggs so far today! My girls are 16 weeks. One started at 15 weeks and two started at 16 weeks. Red sex links. I was so relieved because I got these "false labor" behaviors for two days. I didn't know they did that. One in particular acted like she was laying, complete with bearing...

What age did your hens lay their first egg?

Oh yes, she's squatting. It won't be too long now. I had one thT started laying about 5 days later though most of my others haven't started laying quite yet. She looks just like a few of my sex-linked hens.

What age did your hens lay their first egg?

I have 7 Red Sex Link hens. They are 16 weeks. One started laying last week at 15 weeks and she has been consistently giving me eggs. She took a day off over the weekend. One laid an egg this weekend right at the start of 16 weeks but that was 2 days ago and she's not laid again. Another acted...

Nesting boxes and chickens about ready to start laying

I have a Red-Sex Link that started laying at 15 weeks. Another one gave me one egg at 15 weeks but that was several days ago and she hasn't laid again. Another one, I swear, acts like she is going to lay but doesn't. All seven of them are 16 weeks old. But, they have been squatting for a week or...

Acted like she would lay but didn't-concerning?

I have a 16-week old Red Sex Linked that started laying last week. She laid 3 out of 4 days and has been a champ. This morning at the expected time, she was in her nest and I could see her baring down. She sang her egg song and continued to act like she would lay an egg. She covered herself with...

Is there signs that a hen is ready to lay?

We got our first egg today so I thought I'd share the lead up that indicated that she would start laying soon. I have seven Red Sex Linked chickens that are 15 weeks old. About 10 days ago, I noticed that a few of them seemed to be getting wider butts. It seemed like it happened really fast...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

My Red-Sex Linked chickens are 15 weeks old. We noticed that a few started squatting a few days ago. We got the nests set up and right away they all started checking them out. Today, I noticed that one was sitting in a nest even though I brought treats. I peeked at her and she had thrown bedding...

    EcoGlow reviews??

We were going to get the EcoGlow but we found another brand for about $30 cheaper. I got it yesterday and I LOVE IT. I've been a paranoid freak worry about the house burning down. The chicks seem to love it too. I had to gently push them under it when I first put it in (my chicks are 9 days old)...

    Everyone is so nice!

One of them definitely had pasty butt. I noticed it on the way home and the poor little chick was already half dead. The other one maybe was failure-to-thrive. She looked great but stopped eating and drinking. My replacements all look great. We're on about day 5 and they are bright eyed and...

Do I need to provide grit if I am giving my 5 day old chicks some bits of mashed hard boiled egg?

    Everyone is so nice!

Hi! I'm Melissa and VERY new to this forum. My husband and I used to live in St. Paul, MN where it felt like all our friends had chickens. Now we live in Ohio and finally decided to get our own chickens. I brought home 6 red sex-linked chickens two days ago and I'm already a little obsessed with...
