My barred rock seems to have lost feathers in the butt area and it looks red, not molting, no sign of bugs. At one time or another they all get sticky butts with dried poo on them and then they loose feathers there. Any one have ideas?
Hello all, my Buff Orpington Buffy seems to have hurt her leg probably getting up and down to roost as she's pretty big! Brought her in the house yesterday for a look-see and could not find any sign of breakage or skin tears or any visual damage. She remained very calm the whole time and could...
Was thinking the air in the coop was stale, so this is what I came up with. It's a cupola style ridge vent with an old microwave fan. It's quiet enough and pushes just the right amount of air!
My big fluffy Buff Orpington has an accumulation of dried waste matter that has stuck to her feathers in the vent area. I noticed it had gotten worse rather than better, so I went out with some sharp shop scissors to try and clear it off. I could hardly cut through it as some pine shavings had...
Since the snow and cold our 6 pullets spend more time cooped up. Our coop is pretty well insulated and ventilated. We use the deep litter method and it was changed out recently (about a month ago). The previous litter was good from Sept. 'til mid Jan. Never had even the slightest smell, until a...
How do you sell your eggs? It's just me and my wife here and we can only eat so many eggs. We've gotten 38 eggs in 22 days, mostly from 4 of our girls. Our fifth gave us her 1 st egg today and when all 6 are laying we will be over run with eggs. We have no one to give any to!
I read on hear that 2 nest boxes would suffice for 6 chickens, so I took 2 of the four out for added space. That was fine when only 2 of six were laying! Now that 4 of six are laying they are really fighting for one of the boxes, ignoring the other. I have a web cam in there so I can see the...
Finally, our third girl to lay ( Esther ) our easter egger gave us a nice green egg this morning. Then I dropped it as I was attempting to take a picture.
Two of the girls came in from their romp outdoors to lay. This is our first two egg day since the first one on 1/27/10. Can someone tell me why Rhoda our Rhode Island red puts pine shavings on her back while laying.
Second egg in three days. Switched the view of the coop cam from the roost to the nest boxes so we can see who done it! Still no positive Id. This one is a wee bit larger and a tad browner than egg # 1
