Mama is done with chicks and it's chilly out

We've never had hen raised chicks before and it was SO much better than store bought chicks. Our mama hen was amazing with her chicks until we moved her back to the coop with them, and then decided she's done with them and starting laying eggs again. The chicks are about 5 weeks old. Is this...

Chick was sick and died today, others are fine..

We have 16 adult hens, and 8 "teenagers" as we call them:) They are about 3 months old. Yesterday we noticed one of the younger chicks had a really messy wet bottom, and was lethargic and weak. It was pretty hot out, so we made sure she had water and feed, and I washed her off and inspected...

    Scaly leg mites still! ugh

Oops, one more. It's still very much winter here, cloudy and rainy/snowy all the time so I can't really give the coop a good cleaning with water/bleach, or other sprays right now: if the mites are in the wood in my coop, aren't the birds just going to continually get infected?

    Scaly leg mites still! ugh

Also, does anyone use sulfur powder in the coop or dust bathing spots?

    Scaly leg mites still! ugh

It says this has sulfur in it; can I use my Sulphur Lime Dip that I used on our goats? How often would I apply the Nu-Stock? For how long? Thanks

    Scaly leg mites still! ugh

My poor hens, and the new batch of chicks now have leg mites. This summer I cleaned out every corner of that coop, burned pine shavings, vacuumed, sprayed it down with Neem oil, coated the roosts with Neem oil, then later with coconut oil, dusted with Poultry Dust, filled with new shavings. I...

    Love farm fresh eggs but....

That post was so cute about setting boundaries with them. They have 50 acres to free range, and choose to basically hang around the house despite the dogs nicely chasing them nicely off their area, and our repeated trying to train them away with a broom or hose after other things didn't work...

So that's who is eating our pumpkin!

Haha, yes, saved us the mess and time!

So that's who is eating our pumpkin!

Yes I did spend time climbing over other pumpkins to get just the right one:) Our older hens would never have eaten the pumpkin until it was rotting and had an opening, but our new young flock is really aggressive with foraging and started it. It was actually really cheap so provided a lot of...

    Love farm fresh eggs but....

I wanted ducks first, but they are more expensive and we live on a lot of acres with lots of predators so we thought we'd see how chickens went first. Ducks sound pretty muddy though! Do they come to a coop at night like chickens?

    Love farm fresh eggs but....

don't love my chickens! Between the poop EVERYWHERE, and trying to plant mums for the third time, they really wear me out. Didn't know they would eat the pumpkin we just got either until it was rotten! They are pretty though:)

So that's who is eating our pumpkin!

Noticed a few bite marks the other day and wondered which small critter was eating our pumpkin, then woke up to this! Busted. At least some of them look ashamed:)

    Wry neck/stargazing problems

They aren't getting medicated feed. Do you think she's still eating/drinking? Putting something in the water isn't going to help if she's not.

    Wry neck/stargazing problems

Ok, thanks. I'm a little confused though. Nutridrench has Vit.E and Selenium, both of which I had read are necessary to cure it. Why would I need different vitamin E?

    Wry neck/stargazing problems

I have 3 guinea keets that are 6 weeks old. About 4 days ago we noticed one with wry neck, or stargazing. I have been giving her Nutridrench 4 times a day and trying to force her to eat/drink. None of our guinea keets will eat or drink if you are around watching, and she won't do either when I...

No more eggs; heat or feed change?

We have 15 hens (Australorps are 2 yrs, Dominiques are 1 yr), and 15 chicks (about 15 weeks old). My hens were laying well, about 11 eggs daily, until after around the time we added the chicks. Things started slowing down, and now they aren't laying anymore except for my Dominiques, so 2 eggs a...

Chicks need water through the night?

We moved our 4-5 week old chicks out to the coop today, but they will be in a dog kennel at night to keep them away from the older hens. The chicks have had water and free feed, but the dog kennel is smaller and I'd like to keep water out of the coop if possible. Are they fine to go without...
