YAY! The two oldest girls have come of age! Sylvia (Silver Laced Wyandotte) started laying two days ago, 8/24. Betty (White Leghorn) layed her first today, 8/26.#proudmomma lol
Thanks for the advice. Went ahead with building. Since the girls free range the backyard during the day, i designed a little 4x6 house just for sleeping. They seem to have plenty of room and return to it every evening without issue. That means they like it, right?
Update
Its been a while since I've posted. All 6 ladies are doing well. The cats have accepted that the hens rule the backyard now. We just finished their coop, all recycled materials from a storage building that was in need of being torn down so FREE! Best kind, huh
Getting ideas for our first coop and I keep coming back to yours. Something about the yellow with white trim and the flower boxes just keeps catching my eye. Great job! And thanks for the inspiration :)
They are so adorable when they're scratching. It's like their own little chickie dance. Next time I will have to make them a little pen though. Our pregnant cat was not too happy about them running around the yard and her not being allowed to catch them.
I've looked A LOT at many different styles and a couple stand out to me. I jotted down a rough design a few months back, when I was sure I only wanted 3 hens... LOL! Now that they're here and there's 6 of them, my original design would have to add some feet. Not sure it would be any cheaper to...
Hi Everyone!
New chicken momma here to 6 baby girls, all different breeds. In a perfect world, I'd like to build my own coop but I don't really know what chickens need/want. Should I start off with a prefab and go from there? Or jump in head-first to designing my own? No one really wants to...
Update: We officially have names for 4 of them and unofficially for 2.
The buff orpington and new hampshire red look and act exactly the same right now but, once we can tell them apart, the Red will be Henny Penny (you can't have a flock without one lol) and the Buff will be Goldie Hen, like...
Update: I'm in love!
I thought three would be plenty but I guess I was wrong, lol. Sent the Hubs to get three more this morning, so we've added a White Leghorn, a Buff Orpington and a New Hampshire Red. I read that the bigger the flock, the happier the girls . He was cool with it, but he also...
I use to work at the nursing home in Meeker a few years ago. Now I'm in Maud, southeast of Tecumseh. The guys at the feed store in Seminole said they order them sexed.
Wow! That's quite a bit. I wanted to start out small, just three, but I sent the Hubs into town this morning to get three more - a buff orpington, a new hampshire red and a white leghorn. We're gonna have such a pretty flock.
Hi everyone!
I'm new to BYC and to chickens in general. Been thinking about it for a while. Finally decided to take the plunge and brought home a Silver Laced Wyandotte yesterday and then an Ameraucana and a Brown Leghorn today. The SLW is 5 days old and the other two are both 2 days old. Also...
