I left it alone for a couple of days to see what happened and within a week the side part split off and has now healed nicely! I didn't want to cause unnecessary stress to the hen - might be something to do with the RIR breed (soft beaks?) but I would just leave it alone and keep an eye to make...
I have a couple of sweet 4 week old chicks that I can't figure out whether they are a pullet or cockerel? Any ideas?
Also, thoughts on whether this is a cuckoo maran or barred rock?
Buff Silkie
Thanks for your help! The second chick hatched from a green egg- not a clue on the true Ameracauna question. The egg color means that the mother was an Ameracauna though, correct?
My mom-in-law hatched them about three weeks ago, but we are not sure what breeds they are or their sex. The flock that the eggs came from included the following breeds:
Hens: Ameracauna, Barred Rock, Austrolorp, Silkie, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Crested Polish, Buff Orpington
Roosters: Buff...

We have a general idea of what the coop will look like, but would love some suggestions from...
One person I chatted with said that I should choose the older silkies because they develop slower than other breeds and will be the same size as my other four day old chicks. However, my one silkie that hatched on 3/24 is doing fine with the other breeds..
One person I chatted with said that I should get the older ones because silkies develop slower and are smaller as chicks. But I already have one silkie that hatched 3/24 and is fine with the other breeds.
I am starting my second flock of chicks, but am running into some difficulty finding the breeds that I want hatching around the same times. So far I have 9 different breeds that hatched on Thursday, 3/24 including Barred Rock, Wyandottes, Americaunas, and others. In this mix I also bought a...
