Thanks for the reply. Yes, unfortunately I have introduced new birds to the flock who seemed healthy. Now I am paying the price, it seems.
I went to the local feed store and they gave me antibiotics and Sulmet to add to their water. I am trying to avoid culling for the time being- these...
One of my hens (Ruby- my favorite!) woke up this morning with her eye crusted shut!! She seems to have nasal discharge as well. Two of my other hens have some sort of cough... do they just have a cold? what should I do?
I've given them yogurt for probiotics mixed with garlic and kelp. I...
The same thing happened to me a few months ago... I had only three chickens at the time and they were best friends. Then all of a sudden the top chicken (Pearl) was molting and hurt her leg so another hen (Mabel) decided to step up as top chicken. They were so mean to Pearl for about two weeks...
Wow, here in Portland, OR they are $3 at the CHEAPEST!! Up to $6 at the farmer's markets. I get some for $4.25 to supplement my hens production. I wish I could get farm eggs for $1 or even $2!!!
My chickens just started laying two months ago and one of them is molting. Pearl, my white leghorn, went from laying 6 (!) eggs a week to 0 in a week. There are white feathers everywhere.
The plans call for a corrugated plastic roofing called SunTuf http://www.palramamericas.com/Suntuf
It says to use the tinted one but we used clear because it was cheaper and there is a lilac tree south of the coop that blocks the hot sun from baking the hens in the summer. And it doesn't get...
Wow Hippiechickens- that coop looks awesome! I like how you gave them more room. We only have three hens in ours- he says its for 8 but I don't know how 8 hens would fit in the hen house to sleep!!?? How many do you/will you have? We are going to get two more in the spring and have 5 total...
Hi! I built the garden coop (well, my husband did most of the work and we love it. It cost us about $550- $575. I like it because we have a small yard that we spend a lot of time in and it looks like it is part of the garden. We call it the Coop de Ville. LOL. The chickens love it. They...
This was from our White Leghorn- Pearl- the FIRST day we got her!!! (she is 7 months old)
She has laid 6 eggs a week since then (we've had her for three weeks)
Thanks for the book rec.
I've also noticed they are pretty quick learners.
The first day I had them they went to sleep on the run roost so I put them on the hen house roost. The second night they all slept on the hen house roost.
One of them was sleeping in the nesting box so I blocked it...
Thanks everyone!! I can't imaging Mabel and Pearl jumping up on my arm! I knew there were some drawbacks to getting 'older' chickens and not chicks... but I can already tell that they recognize me- when other people go into their coop they hide in the corner under the hen house but when I come...
Hi Everyone! I'm new to BYC and also to chicken raising... I'm obsessed! Three weeks ago I got three 6-7 month old hens (1 Rhode Island Red-Ruby, 1 Black Astrolorp-Mabel, 1 white Leghorn-Pearl).
My question is- how do I get them to like me enough not to run away from me when I try and pick...
