    Hatchery sending extras?

Avoid Tractor Supply for chicks, if at all possible. Friends purchased pullets from them and ended up with 50 percent roosters. Sounds like the employees mixed up the pullet and straight run bins. I've heard in passing about this happening to others who bought from TS. In my opinion, this is...

    Hatchery sending extras?

If you are not too far from the New Hampshire border, we have had good luck with Derry Feed and Supply for 1 day old chicks (all healthy, correct sex). I think there are also Agways in Massachusetts. We've used the Milford, NH Agway also with good luck.

    Mealworm farming

Thank you both. No chance of small worms as there haven't been beetles in the drawer since 5/13. I ordered a finer mesh strainer after your replies and it seemed to separate the frass from the unused substrate. I then threw the frass in my flower garden. I think I'm good to go. It's been 3...

    Mealworm farming

Does anyone mind telling me what they do with their used substrate? I am just about to start harvesting mealworms from my first drawer and I can see a mix of shed skins, frass and substrate. I don't want to waste the substrate but am not sure about feeding it to the chickens. Thanks!

    Mealworm farming

For me, things generally turn black and die when there's not enough moisture. When I started keeping a small Tupperware container with water in it in my pupae bin, my losses definitely went down.

    Mealworm farming

Thank you to everyone for their advice on this thread. I read the whole thing and don't remember seeing the answer to this question. I have been doing a multi-bin colony for several months, separating out the stages. My beetles spent about 2 weeks in drawer 1 before I moved the beetles to...

    4 week old Chicks

We are in New Hampshire and our chicks have been spending days out in their coop for the last week - they are now 5 weeks old. It's been usually in the 60s to 70s but brought them out yesterday at 55 and today at 50. Watched them closely and they seemed fine (no huddling or making distress...

    Fully feathered?

Thanks for your advice. I put them outside this morning at 52 degrees but it warmed up to 55 within the hour. It's now at about 58 out. Today was the coldest day they've been out yet. I sat out with them for the first hour and sporadically throughout the day and they seemed happy - no...

    Fully feathered?

Hi everyone. I'm a first time chicken momma to 5 week old chicks. The first 4 weeks were spent completely indoors with a Premier 1 heating plate. But last week was warm (60's and 70's) and the chicks were starting to seem cramped so we've been bringing them outside during the day and back...

    Mealworm farming

Thank-you very much! I picked out the little bugs using tweezers. The chicks seemed much more interested in the mealworms than in them, though.

    Mealworm farming

I'm hoping someone could help me. We just purchased our 8 baby chicks about 2 weeks ago and after reading the forums, and this thread in particular, I decided to start raising mealworms as a treat for them. I ordered 2000 mixed size from Amazon and received them today. I dumped the burlap bag...
