Questions on growing barley fodder for the first time

We're experimenting with growing our own fodder to reduce the cost of chicken feed, but I am having the hardest time trying to figure out how much I should grow for our 6 young girls!! We bought 6 small bins and drilled holes in the bottom. Right now I am soaking 2 cups of whole barley in...

    Does my chicken have Bumblefoot?

I let my girls out to free range this morning and noticed my 8 month old White Leghorn limping. I checked her feet and it looks like she might have bumblefoot. The bottom pic of her right leg looks the worse to me but that is the leg she is putting all of her weight on. She can still walk and...

Feed store recommended I feed my girls Hen Scratch

But I've been reading everywhere that scratch is just a treat. I've been feeding them the Farmers Best Hen Scratch with oyster shells on the side this whole time and I get good quality eggs, but now I'm worried they aren't getting the nutrition they need.

    Wash eggs before hard boiling?

I heard that warm or hot water draws bacteria into the eggs. Should I "wash" the eggs with cold water before I hard boil them? Or does the boiling water kill all the bacteria? I just hard boiled 6 eggs without washing or rinsing them, they were pretty "clean" eggs.

    Letting my chickens free range?!?

Ok, so we have 6 pullets. 3 Ameraucana's, 2 White Leghorns (19 weeks old) and 1 Rhode Island Red (10 weeks old). We've never let them out of their coop to free range because I'm scared they will fly over the fence. We live in the city so our backyard is not huge, but we were thinking about...

When should I remove the "panic room" that separates my 8 week old chick from the 16 week old chicke

When should I remove the "panic room" that separates my 8 week old chick from the 16 week old chickens? We have only ONE 8 week old chick that is almost the same size as the FIVE older 16 week old chickens, and I'm wondering when I should remove her panic room and let her completely settle in...

When should I integrate one 3 week old chick with five 11 week old pullets?

Right now the 3 week old is in the coop but separated from the other chickens with a wire wall. The five 11 week old pullets grew up together, the 3 week old is all alone. She has been separated from the others for about a week and now they hardly notice her. When should I remove the wire wall...
