    What breed is my chick?!

I don't know too much about Andalusians--- but the beak looks a bit too thick to have any such cross? Although the blue coloring matches up of course--- Her head looks alot like a young easter egger mutt (thicker beak, low comb, longer than usual neck) (the ones with the less puffy cheeks)...

    DIY Bantam Coop?

I recently lost a favorite rooster to a falcon.... and now I have a new bantam fluffball I am just absolutely in love with. I've decided to stop my bantams from free ranging. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any GOOD DIY plans or even photos of your own Bantam coops (I can get a good idea of...

It's been a terrible week for me... Like, just awful. One thing that really makes me happy is seeing baskets/cartons of beautifully colored eggs with different colors and values! I'm wondering if maybe you guys can give me a little pick me up and post some photos of your pretty...

Hawk attack - eye injury help please!

I can't list exact brands--- because I don't consider myself knowledgeble enough--- but.... Tractor Supply and other agriculture stores carry alot of different poultry eye ointments that can help the healing process and relieve pain. Looks like she should be okay--- but a bit of extra care never...

I have a large sandbox in our coop..... Look up "Sand Dipper Jr." on Amazon.com. That thing is so useful for cleaning.

What do YOU use to collect your eggs?

Oh my gosh.... this is kind of shameful. But every year I buy my family a gift basket for the holidays from wineandcountrygiftbaskets.com ..... I typically choose them based on which basket I want to use the following year to collect the eggs ..... >_>

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Super proud of my girls. I have 9 laying hens and this is how they've done the last two days. It's been cold but they've kept up. And miraculously, my Marans eggs have started to get darker and darker. I'm pretty excited.

The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

Hey guys! My babies were shy about coming outside for a while, but I finally managed to catch them while they were out in the daylight! So I finally got some pics. :) These guys are 12 weeks old-- 3 roosters and a hen (terrible luck, but I love them anyway). Pullet's name is Token (because...

NOPE! They definitely shouldn't be. Luckily I have nestboxes on the opposite side where the laying is being done, come Spring I'm boarding the nest boxes they've been sleeping in up, to try to coerce them to sleeping on the perches above and below..... I don't know why, but I have 7 of them...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I very much appreciate the tip! Like I said--- I'm very new to this, what information I've gotten is from other local chicken people, and they are not always right. I don't think I will do it again next year-- it doesn't seem necessary. Luckily my chickens free range over 20 acres so there isnt...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

It's supposed to be small amounts of moisture on bottom? From the chicken poo. Thats the whole point of the deep litter method after. You won't get extra warmth if theres no compost. What you can't do is leave the top wet. Theres 5 inches of dry straw on top of mine. As far as I know-- this...

When your chickens get old and die...

Do these still exist? Leaving a link just in case people aren't interested in seeing what I mean by "guillotine" https://permies.com/t/8690/a/2194/chicken%20guillotine.jpg

When your chickens get old and die...

Man I wouldn't be able to do the cone method.... I don't know why but it just seems like it takes too long.... I would feel terrible. Anyone ever use a gouillotine and just hug them through the nerve-stuff so they don't go running around?

If it helps your decision, chickens are FAR more kid friendly than geese in my opinion! Welcome to BYC! <3
