My proposed home-made chicken feed mix- does it sound right?

Right off the bat I can tell you that the whole 2 part, 1 parts and 1/2 part is the incorrect way to figure and mix feed. You need to go by pounds as in say 10 lbs corn, 8 lbs peas and 4 lbs rolled oats. Your also lacking proteins, and I believe that your using to much linseed ("flax seed")...

    Seed starting woes

Most of Foxfarms potting mix's contain bat guano and earth worm castings so you shouldn't have a low phosphorus problem in the soilless mix. Are you fertilizing them any? If not you could hit them with Foxfarms "grow big (6-4-4)" and see what that does. Use the rate recommended on the bottle.

    Seed starting woes

What are the day and nighttime temperatures where the plants are being kept. If the temps are too cool it makes it hard for your tomatoes to take in phosphorus. Raising the temp some (if there indoors) will help, adding fertilizer isn't going to help if the temps are on the low side.

    Langshan or Sumatra?

Where did you get them from? The shank/ feet color is incorrect for both Black Langshan and Black Sumatra. The chick could be a Splash and that would account for the yellow shank/ feet.

    Langshan or Sumatra?

Cant see the comb well but the feathered legs would mean Langshan, it should also have a single comb. Sumatra chickens are clean legged and pea comb.

cooked bones not good for dogs -- how 'bout chickens?

Honestly, since there were never any wild chickens there is no true "natural" way of feeding a chicken. Chickens are a subspecies that humans created by the selective breeding of Gallus (Junglefowl). Since chickens have been bred and cared for by man for hundreds of years the more correct way...

cooked bones not good for dogs -- how 'bout chickens?

9 time out of 10 the aggression a rooster has to the handler/owner is do to them being improperly raised. Over handling and thinking there a lap pet will cause some chickens to become defensive and they will tend to attack. Your rooster could also be defending his flock, he could be the dominate...

Can I Use Chicken Coop Hay/Poop in my Garden?

Composting the manure before applying it to the garden will do a number of things. When you compost you; - Bring the Nitrogen (N) level of the manure down to a level that wont burn (kill) the plants. - Changing the N from a soluble form to a less soluble form which will reduce salt build-up...

What is the best tomato to grow?

It hard to name a "best" tomato. I plant a few hundred tomatoes and dozens of each variety for my use and to sell and I have yet found a "perfect" tomato. There are a lot of good tomatoes out there but not one is what I would call the best tomato. I try to stay away from really old Heirloom...

Can I Use Chicken Coop Hay/Poop in my Garden?

One of the best things you can do is compost it, since the manure and straw mix saw little green products and moisture it most likely didn't compost much. If you do a hot compost mixing in green products, keep it moist and turn it often you should have a good compost for use in your garden in...

CAN YOU FEED CHICKENS EGG SHELLS????

The size of the egg shell pieces doesn't really matter, it is the particle size that matters. Egg shells much like limestone has a small calcium particle size and both pass though a chickens digestive track fast, to fast to fully absorb the amount of calcium they need to produce quality egg...

    Plant ID signs

If you mean how long will a single marker last me, it depends on how much I use it, at least a year or two. Now if your asking about the length of time until it starts to fade, I have some stuff that lasted a good two/ three years. If your looking for something to last longer than that...

    Square Foot Gardening Thread

River sand is going to have some nutrients like silica and or calcium carbonate but it would take next to forever for it to break down in the soil. Greensand is a hardened sediment not really a "true sand" and it takes time to breakdown into the soil but breaks down way faster than "sand" i.e...

Quote: This is followed by a mixture of equal parts river sand(often called green sand) and coffee grounds(donated by my local Starbucks-also used to suppliment my compost in winter) Greensand and River Sand are two different things. River sand is just that river sand and is much like the...
