Thanks so much. They are adorable so I feel bad they could end up in a small cage and sold for $5 at my feed store. Perhaps I should see if I can find them a home using Craig's List? Any recommendations? Roosters just aren't allowed in my immediate neighborhood but there are more rural areas in...
Thank you both. Here are a couple of full-body pictures. Sounds like color of comb is a factor, and that makes sense. The pullets I have show no color in their tiny combs coming in. They are all almost 8 weeks. I'm a new chicken-owner so appreciate the input!
I was thinking these were both cockerels, and that the one with less comb was simply a runt as she/he has always been smaller, but now I'm wondering if it's possible it could still be a pullet? She/he is in the foreground with the other obvious cockerel, and then I've provided a close up of her...
Thanks so much for giving me hope. I'll check again at 10 weeks. It's funny how quickly the bantams are just screaming rooster in comparison but I get that all breeds are different. Have a great evening.
Thanks for the info. My feed store gives a 90% chance of pullet in the larger breeds and only 50% with bantams. Hence the two bantam Roos I've got to get rid of.
Thank you so much for the info! Oh I really hope my SS is not a rooster. Love her, but I'll have a chance to get another chick end of July at my feed store in Petaluma. Was just hoping to avoid introducing a lone chick to an established flock.
The one in the tree is an Ameracauna so I guess that's the same as an Easter Egger since there will be blue-green eggs. So you think it's a he?
The one with a little white on my lap with the other two is a Speckled Sussex. That's the one I'm thinking could be a he with the slightly larger...
This Speckled Sussex (front) has a slightly larger comb than the other large hens. At 7 1/2 weeks perhaps a comb starting to appear is normal for hens too? OR is she possibly a cockerel? I hope not. She is so pretty. Thanks for your input!
Thank you for the welcome and the response! I'm happy if my 4 big birds are hens as I wanted to end up with 4. My 2 bantams are definitely roos which is too bad given I have a 6-year old boy I wanted to keep a small bird for. But, the Mille de Fleurs have been more skittish than the large birds...
This Black Astralorp is 7 1/2 wks old and is behaving a bit like a rooster. It's tail is pointed and high but no comb. What do you think? Thanks for your help!
Black Astralorps 7 1/2 wks old. Harder to tell with this breed due to the upright pointy tail. But no comb at all while a bantam has a pronounced comb and is surely a rooster--too bad. Thanks for your help!
