    Dead Buff Orpington

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. Too late for an autopsy. I buried her right away. If this happens again I will send the body off to get looked at or do it myself. When I was young we had a hundred without names. 50 years later we have six and they all have names.

    Dead Buff Orpington

I'm looking for ideas of why our Buff died. I don't have many clues but this is what I know. We have six chickens. They have a good coop, excellent feed and no chance of predators (the run is completely enclosed in hardware cloth and there is plenty of room). I collect the eggs, check feed and...

    Deep Litter method or Sand??

Henless, your run looks very similar to mine but I have been at it for less than a year and live in the northeast. I put a tin roof over the run late this summer and also added a bunch of leaves this fall. i noticed that now that the run is protected from the rain and I have no more grass...

    chickens not roosting

We have six chickens, 6 feet of 2x4 on edge for them to roost. They cram into about 1 1/2 feet of roost with 2 or three on the bar and a few under them on the poop board. It's still about 50 degrees out so it shouldn't be a temperature thing. Go figure.

    Japanese knotweed

I know that this is an old thread but to any still wondering Japanese knotweed seems fine for chickens. It is invasive and hard to kill. I have been feeding it to the chickens as a snack when I get home from work all summer. They are fine and seem to love it.

To roof or not to roof (the run)

Thanks Mary. There is an area or two that could use extra support. I'll get that taken care of before snowfall. You're right, at 3am the girls are on their own.

To roof or not to roof (the run)

In the end I wound up stacking three two by fours to gain a little bit of pitch. If I ever build another run it will have proper pitch from the start. It would have been easy to do as I built it but I was thinking it was just a run and didn't think about the need to cover it later on. After...

    She bit me

The other day my Easter egger bit me in the eye! I think she thought my eyelashes were food. No permanent damage just sore for a few days. I won't let that happen again! I'm sure you hen will be treating you just fine tomorrow.

    Barred Owl

Looking for ideas on how to scare away an owl. Yesterday it was sitting in a tree checking out the chickens. The chickens of course freaked out and made one hell of a lot of noise. The smart ones went inside. The not so bright ones stayed out and screamed till I scared the owl away. The run is...

To roof or not to roof (the run)

Here's a photo of our setup for 6 chickens. 4x6 coop inside a 12x13 run. 1/2" hardware cloth on the sides and top. The roof of coop extends along the the back to provide some protection. My original plan was to tarp off the back wall and the side to the left of the door as a wind break. Now...

Closing up the coop at night?

My run is as predator proof as possible. Concrete floor but some is cracked and broken. Half inch hardware cloth top and sides. Locks on the doors. Pop door. Is open 24/7. No issues so far.

    Dutch doors on chicken run

We just finished our run this week. The top is covered by hardware cloth panels. We made one panel about 1foot by 2 feet and hinged it so we could toss things in. The pop door to the coop is a guillotine type that operates by pulling a cable from outside the enclosed run / coop. So far no escapes.

Still kind of early but would love folks to take their best guess. Thanks (added the poll just to see how it works)

pullet or cockerel easter egger 6 weeks

Good news! I would hate to have to rehome any. We have six in total, 2 eggers, 2 RR and 2 Buff Orpingtons. The other egger has similar coloring so she should be safe too. We should finish the run / coop this week and they can finally move out of the house!! Thanks

pullet or cockerel easter egger 6 weeks

Maybe too soon to tell but would like opinions on the gender of this bird. Fingers crossed for pullet! I have read quite a bit but the behavior and white feathers on it's tail make me worried. But then again I have a RR with the same white tips.

Costs Of Raising Backyard Chickens - How Much Is It To Raise Chickens?

I'm new to chickens but I already know that first egg will cost me $1000! We built a 4x6 coop and are building a 12x13 run. I used extra materials I had around the house but still had to buy lots of things. The brooder was a large free crate from work, the chicks and food were inexpensive but...

    Naked chick butt

Three weeks or so ago we got 6 chicks. Our first! They are growing quickly and all seem healthy, active and hungry. One chick has a naked butt. An area about the size of a quarter did not feather out, not even peach fuzz. Otherwise it seems fine. The area looks like healthy skin, no...
