I just wanted to say thank you for all the advice on this site about coop styles! Two years ago I housed my chickens in a modified shed style coop. Most of my chickens and my rooster lost some of their comb to frostbite during our long cold winter. I had believed I should keep them snug and air...
After one year of use I still love my Pullet-Shut door. It is difficult to figure out the timer at first, and a pain to reset it during season changes. Other than that, it is a work horse that never lets me down! Consistent, heavy duty performer!
@Blooie Thank you for the great article! I have long witnessed the effects raising animals can have on my spectrum kiddo! She is 16 now, and carries around her new chick, Buzz Marshall, whenever she can. She loves all of the older chickens, as well, except the rooster. He tends to attack her...
Thanks @bruceha2000 & @Molpet! It must be fine on high right now because they are cuddled up in the back where its nearer the ground, but have run out to get a drink occasionally. Another just hatched, so I'll give the last 2 eggs a couple of days before I move everyone outside to the coop.
half way thru day 18 and 2/5 hatched so far, my 2 little olive eggers. Another one just pipped to the outside, and another pipped to the outside last night, but hasn't moved since. I'm worried about that one.
I have 3 new chicks fresh out of the incubator. I think I have everything set up correctly, but I can't find my thermometer I bought for this and the chicks hatched day 18, thought I'd have a few more days! Is it okay to turn the heating pad all the way up for now until I hunt down that pesky...
Tomorrow is lockdown day! My youngest daughter set 6 eggs. 1 was infertile. We could see movement in 4 of the other 5 two days ago. My oldest daughter had taken 1 strange egg to school a few days before we set ours, and the teacher popped it into her incubator, and that one hatched today. So 1...
Everyone seems fine, you guys are right :) I do have the heatlamp in there until Monday when the temp should jump to positives, but like I said, its staying around 20*F with the lamp so it seems like that is a good solution for now. I'm glad I didn't bring them into the basement, that would have...
@The Phantom I'll see how they do tonight and if they seem in regular spirits tomorrow. I mostly posted this so I can show the kids that yes, they should be fine :) I'm going out to check on them again right now. I mostly worry about the one dang hen who insists on flying up into the breezy...
I'm in the same boat, large coop and only 6 cold chickens. Its -20*F here, though. I went ahead and but the heat lamp (tightly secured) in for the next few nights of negatives. It is only around 20*F inside with the lamp, so its not like its creating a sauna. But I'm a noob, and I love my...
With it dropping into the -20*F wind chill tonight should I do anything special?
So far this winter I took the regular device and created a nice tight coop with lots of deep litter and plenty of rafter ventilation. I had one small ambient heat panel in case anyone got overly cold, but other wise...
Ken,
Once you're sure, it might make sense to find out if there is someone who processes meat near you (or process them yourself!) Unless they feel like pets, then you could advertise on a locally craiglist type thing or ask around to see if anyone wants roosters to keep as pets. Whoever takes...
My flock of 7, one rooster and 6 pullets, get some limited free-range time when I'm home. They are just about 6 months old, and have started to venture further afield lately, but always together. Yesterday when I called them in before leaving for my daughters birthday party, all but 2 of the...
I'm so sorry for your and your hen's loss :( I truly hope she starts to feel better soon. I have no advice for chicken attachments. Dogs can morn for days to months when they lose a pack mate. Just be there for her and help her to establish the new pecking order without him.
I'm so sad for you...
Yeah, I know! My Barred Plymouth Rock hen ended up being a rooster too! They are sex-linked and should have been easier to get right. But so far, I'm happy with him protecting the flock. I got that mealmaker female, so that kinda makes up for it.
Well, you could always donate him for someone's...
