Ha! That's what I thought until the bill started to change.

    Which technique is more accurate...

...in sexing ducks? I purchased 4 rouens at the end of April at only a few days old. I am positive that I have one drake and at least 2 hens (I have posted about this before...) The other one looks like a hen and quacks like a hen but its bill has started to turn an olive green shade. That...

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Thank you so much! I couldn't find a single thing on females with the green sheen. It was driving me crazy!

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Just popping back in. I took a new picture today and even though 'she' still has a very orange bill there is definitely a green sheen to it's head. Is it safe to say 'she' is really a he? By the way, don't mind the water. It was fresh this morning... Such mud babies.

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

One last question... Our drake, Ollie, looks a bit different from the others. Does he look like a standard Rouen? Here he is with the others (back right)

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Thanks for the advice! All our ducks were on extra niacin from the beginning but it didn't seem to help. Pepper is happy though and we don't plan on adding any ducklings to the mix so we won't be passing on those genes

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Yes, that's Pepper. His/her foot was deformed when hatched. There is nothing "fixable" about it (no infection) and doesn't cause any issues in walking so we are just letting it be.

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Thank you for the help! I love them all anyway so it doesn't matter to me :) My only concern is only having one hen. I may have to rehome my drakes as I don't have enough space for extra hens!

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Gah! I purchased mallards! I am new to owning ducks so I trusted the farmer where I buy my chickens... That would explain why one of my ducks looks different than the others. How can you tell them apart?

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

I posted this question on a different board but it was suggested I pop over here to the mallard board with my question. I am trying to figure out the sex of two of my 8 week old mallards. Two of the four have a nice green sheen to their heads so it is pretty obvious that they are drakes...

    Drakes or hens?

    Thanks! I will do that

    Drakes or hens?

I know the 'sex my duck' threads are plenty but have to know! I currently have 4 mallard ducks that are about 8 weeks old. Two of them are obviously male and have a nice green sheen to their pretty little heads. The other 2 I am not so sure about. They all seem to 'quack' and all the you tube...
