I have a beautiful 4 month old bantam roo and 2 standard sized hens. They didn't hatch together but have grown up together and need to stay as a little family. Hens will start laying any day now. I live in Tucson, Arizona.

It is a little warm down here in Tucson. Hey- anyone out there who can take a bantam rooster? He is sweet and a tiny little mighty thing. Just cannot keep him because we are within the Tucson limits.

That is one cool looking coop! Nice work, you should be proud of yourself and your grandkids will have so much fun with the chicks. Lifetime experience!
I have a very broody Buff Orpington, Ms. Ellie, and she has been sitting on some eggs for the better part of this month. She is in the coop with 5 other hens. Tonight when I went to secure the coop- Ms. Ellie had blood on her beak so I gently lifted her from her nest and noticed 4 eggs...
Hi there. Just hatched some really cute chicks! Curious as to when they are okay to start outside a little bit. They are about a week old and I am sure getting bored in their little brooder- they told me so. Also- do I keep them on chick starter for 4 months? What about innoculations for...

We were lucky to have a school incubator hatch 16 out of 17 eggs. VERY CUTE. The rooster is a Pekin Bantam and the contributing hens a Leghorn and and Araucana. So, being new to babies (I have 6 laying hens currently), when it is safe to put them outside to learn to scratch for a bit? How...
I am experiencing a broody hen myself. She is a pretty BO named Ellie. This is also my first experience with a broody lady. She is currently sitting on a baseball and will growl at us and puff herself up like a fluffy basketball when I have to pick her up to put her in the hen house at night...
She is a bit over a year. They free range in my yard in the day and I give them an organic pellet- oyster shells are available 24/7 in their run/dining area. I tried to watch her poop last night and it looked like a 'shart' just a little came out. I am going to go and look near the area of...
Over the past 2 weeks I have had an egg filled with blood, a rubber egg and after opening a boiled egg tonight it was clear that it was full of blood- the albumen was brown. I know who has laid this egg- she is a Buff O and has been acting very strange for 2 days now. Last night when I went to...

YES, YES and YES. I am right there with you. After waking up to a bobcat inside the coop and three of my girls already gone- that place is like Ft. Knox. Lockup every night as soon as they roost- I have a converted playhouse as a coop and we have retrofitted a door on the front which...

For sure. They are sweet and dear to my heart. When we decided to become little urban farmers- well, it was a little scary because we all love animals so much and don't want to see them hurting. The bobcat however- can kiss my grits.
You do feel bad for them. They provide so much for your family and they are your kdis with feathers. I am going to make her a nice salad this morning garnished with some grapes...
Thank you- I do spend time with her and she has 5 new hen sisters. She melds with them just fine and has adjusted to them very nicely. She seems to be high up in the ranks with them. I am paying special attention to her daily and she comes to me for food and love- never turn her down.
Within the last month 3 out of 4 hens were killed by a bobcat- did I mention I hate bobcats? The remaining hen, Ms. Claus (araucana) has not laid a single egg- I am sure of it. Have you ever heard of a chicken being so shocked or scared that they stop laying ??? Just looking for a little...
I am using DE in the bottom of my run under alfalfa and shavings...also we sell our eggs to one little old couple for $3.50 per dz. They are not particular with brown or green eggs...they just love having fresh eggs. We might even see some cookies from them
