    PROTEIN CONTENT LAYERS

I probably forgot to mention that some of my hens are losing feathers so that's why I wanted to increase their protein, from what I've read. Some are losing feathers and some aren't and I have a variety of different breeds. I thought some were starting to molt, (they are 1 year old now), but...

    PROTEIN CONTENT LAYERS

What feed do you buy that has a higher protein? I use organic layer now that is only 16% protein, but I cannot seem to find anything organic that is higher unless I go with the grower feed which is 18%. Any suggestions if I want to increase their protein? I know some people suggest giving cooked...

    Help- wasp nest near coop

Nest is located in a tight area up high and there is no way to smash, hit and run from the nest, or vacuum it out. It is in an elevated playhouse and the nest is on the inside part of the house! Very difficult area to move around in so spraying seems to be the best option, but we are concerned...

    Help- wasp nest near coop

Getting rid of the nest what we want to do. We would spray at night so as not to get stung. Chickens will be in their coop which is about 10 ft. from where the nest is. Coop door is closed, but it has vents open for ventilation. Is it still safe to spray if wind is blowing away from coop??

    Help- wasp nest near coop

The wasp nest is inside our grandchildrens playhouse where they play (blow torch is not an option unfortunately) and we don't want them getting stung or anyone else! We don't want to use a wasp spray as I heard that can be bad for the chickens. However it is not in the coop, just nearby. So...

    Help- wasp nest near coop

Hi, We found a growing wasp nest (paper wasp?) very close to our chicken coop and run. It is inside our grandchildrens playhouse which is near the chickens. I've read a few previous posts on using regular Dawn liquid dish soap with water to spray on the nest to kill them. Does anyone know what...

    Pine Needles in run

Hi, I have been reading about using pine needles in the chicken run on some of the older posts. I love that idea as we have several pine trees on our property and more next door. We did put some of the dried brown needles in one area of the run. It looked like some of the hens were trying to eat...

Hi, I have a flock of 12 hens who are a little over 2 months old. We have some leftover cooked good size chunks of steak. Can I feed it to them and if so do I need to cut it up into small pieces or will my chickens just pick at it? What is the best way to give it to them? Thanks

Feeding Grit, how much, how often

Hi Everyone, After reading numerous threads on the subject of feeding grit, I am still somewhat confused. My chicks are now 6 weeks old, have been out in their coop and large run for a couple of weeks now. They are eating their starter feed along with grass, bugs, treats etc. We have rich soil...

    Chickens and compost

Is there any scrapes that should be avoided to throw in the run besides dairy, grease and moldy foods? Can they have flowering herbs like dill, basil etc from the garden?

    giving chickens herbs and fruit

Does anyone know if it's okay to feed my 6 week old flock the flowering tops of my herbs that I cut back? Like dill, parsley, basil? I've read were you can give them the herb itself, but I need to cut back my flowering tops and wasn't sure if I can throw those into their run for them to eat...

    meal worms and treats

Yes, I have been giving them chick grit. Is it better to add the grit into their crumbles or in a separate dish? When I put a small amount into a dish they eat it all up. Will they get too much grit?

Hi I am a newbie as well. My chicks are 3 weeks as well. Just wondering, do you chop the spinach up or give them the whole leaf? Also, when feeding other treats do you give them the whole worm from the ground and same goes for the freeze dried worms or do you need to chop into smaller pieces...

grass clumps with dirt and roots in brooder?

I am only cleaning it that often because that's what I thought I was suppose to do. It actually never seemed very dirty, so probably the every other day is just fine, even with that it never seems very bad. Thanks.

Medicated starter chick food - how long?

Thanks so much. Should I offer the grass w/dirt daily or just a few times a week? Ans do I need to disinfect the brooder and the waterer with the 9/1 ratio of water to bleach every time I change/clean it? I've been rinsing it out thoroughly with water each time, is that good enough?. Thanks.
