    My chicks are here!!!!!!!

They are so sweet! Yes, hold them a lot, and especially feed them treats from your hand. This will help them to see you as their mama. You can give them plain yogurt, a little shredded cheese, chopped up spaghetti noodles, boiled egg yolk or scrambled eggs right away, and moisten their food...

Question about allowing broody hen to raise a clutch - how do you integrate her & chicks back into f

I don't know how the rooster will respond, but I have a mamma with chicks on the floor of our coop and the other hens are VERY respectful of her. We had them together from day 1, I watched carefully for the first few days but they did fine. It depends on the individuals in the flock and how...

Handling very young pet chicks: Yea or Nay?

Only deprived chicks don't get held. We hug and kiss ours daily, and feed them out of our hands. Tuck them into our shirts when they are cold and watch TV with them. They are to enjoy!!! The only time I wouldn't try to hold chicks is if a mamma hen is ready to peck me if I do.

It's a cold and windy day, chicks are 2 1/2 weeks old

And mama hen has them outside. I'm so worried that the babies will get chilled. Anyone have some practical advice short of chasing them down and locking them up inside?

Could I trick my Broody Hen by placing already hatched chicks under her?

Yes, she will probably do fine adopting chicks. But they can't be too old. I have done this twice with a broody. First, I make sure the mama is in a location that is safe for the babies, then, after she is settled at night I begin slipping day old chicks under her wings. I give her 1 or 2 at a...

cockerel or pullet!(I'm sure, but just want confirmation)

"He" doesn't have the BR hackle feathers like Mylo or the long curving saddle feathers either. How old is he? If he's the same age as Mylo I'd say Otis looks more like a pullet.

charcoal splash bearded silkie rooster pick up only

I live in San Diego County This is for a Gorgeous charcoal colored bearded silkie. He has silver splashes in his hackles, heavy leg and foot feathering, and a full bushy tail with green tinges. This is the most beautiful bird I've raised, hatched on April 6th and raised all organic.

Finish this sentence: "You know you're addicted to chickens when..."

We SO need a LIKE button! You secretly have chickens even though it is against the CC&Rs of your HOA. You hug em, love em, kiss em every day Watching and being with them is your main choice for relaxation. You buy 4 dozen eggs to hatch when you get a broody, give some to her and put the...

two broody hens and no rooster WWYD

If your bator eggs aren't too far along could give her some to hatch. But if she doesn't get to sit for close to 21 days she may not be ready when the chicks hatch. If you want her to mother the chicks for you she'll incorporate them into the flock and you won't have to worry about keeping them...

Quote: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/81466_chickie_day_out_2_022.jpg is this what the different ones are supposed to look like? pullett vs cockeral? I'm wondering if this is true for all breeds or just some. If this is true, we can sex our chicks when they are just a week old.

OMG, chicken math totally has me tied down. If I can't stop the addiction cycle it will force me to move to a farm. DH doesn't want to do that though so still selling off my new hatchlings. I'm living vicariously through the rest of you.
