Sexing your Silkies (PICTURES AND TIPS - Updated July-5-12)

Clementine is a girl. She has light blue skin patch behind her beak which all my silkie hens have. The round head crest says pullet as well, cockerels head crests tend to go back rather than up and out and around. Pretty bird.

Sexing your Silkies (PICTURES AND TIPS - Updated July-5-12)

Goldie is a rooster. Only a male silkie would have a comb like that. Females tend to have a blue comb (silkie.)

Put apple cider vinegar with the mother in their drinking water. Put a tbsp of ACV for every gallon of water. It will boost their immune systems. Sometimes I throw chopped garlic and hot peppers into a little boiling water and let them sit, when it cools I add it to their water.

Are Cochin Roosters Know for Mean Behaviors?

I have had two cochin roosters. The first one was a partridge cochin bantam size. He was very mean, always sneaking up on me to attack but backing off if I turned and faced him. He only came after me when my back was turned. He would also antagonize the alpha rooster (big barred rock) by jumping...

    Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

I finally ordered some BLRW for the spring! I have been wanting them for the last two years but I always miss the window to order them. I will post pictures of them and their progress when it happens. They are hatched on 4/30 and I will probably have them on or about 5/2.

This chicks were fathered by Sparkles (he is presently my profile pic) and an old english game hen bantam. The one in the middle is a hen. This is their mother. This is their father This chick is half blue silkie. I do not know if the other half is game or mil fleur. If she is half game then...

    Silkies with larger Chickens together?

I ordered 25 large chickens (barred rocks, Delawares and silver laced wyandottes) and 25 bantams, 11 of which are silkies. I kept the two flocks housed together but I had a divider up so they could see each other. They all free range together and are a little over a year old now. Both flocks...

    cochin rooster personality?

That's funny you say that because I have a partridge cochin bantam whose a little terror. He's always trying to sneak up and jump into me. My alpha roo chases him around when he acts up (and sometime just for fun.) With that said I have 4 large cochins and the roo is an absolute sweetheart. They...

    Neighbor's Dogs Killed 18 Chickens

My neighbors' husky got three of my hens. It turns out that she was wearing an electric collar and the circuit breaker popped. Everybody was free ranging in the front yard and from across the street I am sure it looked like an all you can eat buffet. They felt bad and gave me twice as much as I...

    I LIKE my Rooster

I have a barred rock rooster that is the best that a flock keeper could ask for. He has never challenged me, he is alert and protective of the girls and he will not tolerate the other roosters giving me trouble. He has never shown aggression or defiance towards people and is trustworthy. When he...

Review by '' on item 'Barred Rock'

The barred rock are always to first to explore uncharted territory and changes made to their enviroment. The other chicks would follow their lead. My barred rooster is the best a flock keeper could ask for. He knows his place and is obedient. He will put himself in harms way to protect the girls...

I have some mixed bantams that are definitely half old english game. They have feathers on their feet but I am trying to guess whether they are mil fleur, partridge cochin bantam, or buff brahma. They could even be part silie but I don't see black skin or fluffy heads. Any thoughts?

I had seven new flock members hatch under a buff orpington over Memorial Day weekend. I posted pictures of them and their mother back then. I just wanted to post what they look like now. They are about 13.5 weeks. This pullet is from a barred rock roo over a silver laced wyandotte. She has a...

strange hairy growth on turkey chest

I am glad you asked. I just noticed it today on one of my young toms (they are about 14 weeks old.) I was nervous because I have over 140 poultry birds and I know there are some infections that turkeys can get that you have to get rid of all your birds to eradicate. I'd post a picture but there...

    Rooster Flocks!

I just hatched some chicks (actually the are almost 7 weeks old) and I got chicks in the mail 2.5 weeks before they hatched. I always get extra roosters so I can have my pick. I am setting up a rooster pen and I plan on using the ones that I don't breed for meat. Thanks for the post.

Help my 9 week old chicken might be sick or die

A rooster that young needs starter feed, it is higher in the protein that chickens need to grow feathers. Hens don't need the extra calcium layer feed provides until they are ready to start producing. Roosters don't need extra calcium but if he's reached his adult size it's no biggy. How many...

No feeling below the break above her knee

I have a similar problem with my hen, I didn't realize this was a new thread and I was hoping someone would have replied to it so I could use the advice. I just noticed my hen's injury. She is limping and can not feel her talon below the knee. How did you make her sling?

Where Do You Stand With Incubation?

I have never hatched eggs in an incubator when I order chicks from hatcheries I know they use them. I have buff orpingtons and two of them are broody. Mama Hen just hatched her first clutch of eggs and they are almost 5 weeks old. They follow her everywhere and she takes such good care of them...
