How can I tell if my broody is accepting her chicks?? Help!

last night I put 2 chicks under my broody hen. She laid on them all night fine. I went to check on them later and found one had gotten out from under her. When it got near her she pecked it, not too hard and it wasn't hurt, and it did eventually get back under her. I've been checking a lot but I...

    Advice on broody RIR

I have a 1.5 year old RIR (maybe production red) who all summer has been flirting with being broody. I would find her sitting in the nest in classic broody mode, skwacking at me when I collected eggs but she never stuck with it more than 24 hours. Well last week I found her on the nest and she...

    HELP- new hen escaped

She was only in the coop for about 24 hours before the breakout. She has a buddy chicken that she's been with since she was chick here with us, and most of my chickens left her alone but one was trying to dominate her all day. Again, there wasn't any blood or injury so it wasn't awful but she...

    HELP- new hen escaped

i got 5 new hens into my flock this morning. Two came together and three came together. Everyone was getting along except 1 was being picked on by one of my older hens. The hen was already a year old and was a smaller hen. No blood or injury occurred just pecking. The hen escaped and I have not...

    Is my RIR broody?

i have a flock of 5 chickens, all a year old. Today I noticed one my RIR was in the nest box for a while (I've been keeping a very close eye on my chickens as I lost one about a month ago, natural causes it turns out). I checked on her a few times today, she seemed fine and healthy but every time...

    Unexplained chicken death?!?

Hello! I have a mixed flock (2 RiR, 2 silver laced wyandottes, 2 black star sex links). They are all perfectly healthy birds. I've been getting 5-6 eggs a day for weeks now. They are all a year old but started laying between November -January. They have constant access to food and water...

    Hen's quit laying?

Chickens get less productive every year, with a real noticeable difference after 3-4 years. At that point the amount of eggs will decrease no matter what season it is, but especially in winter you will see a big decrease. You should see an increase though as the day light hours start increasing...

    Hen's quit laying?

How old are the hens? New pullets in their first winter will lay quite well throughout the season. Older hens who are in or coming out of molt will have a much less productive winter. Also depends on breeds. Not sure if you have different breeds this year than previous years, but some do much...

Does yolk color change as pullet gets older?

Hello! I've recently (finally!) had some chickens start laying eggs! I have a question I haven't seen to find any information on. My chickens are laying pretty pale yolks (same as commercial store bought eggs). I know I know, yolk color doesn't mean more or less nutritious. But I so want...

Which pullet will lay first? Guesses!?!

Thanks for the input! I checked a few of the birds (one of the RIR and one wyandotte) a few weeks ago and the bones were just barely one finger apart. Maybe I'll start rechecking.

Which pullet will lay first? Guesses!?!

I have 6 pullets that are all 26 weeks old. Bought them when they were 20 weeks. Non have started laying yet but I'm finally starting to see some signs of maturity. This is my first time raising chickens. I haven't noticed any other signs from any of them. No squatting although they...

Why aren't my hens laying yet?

Good idea I'll have to inspect my yard a little closer today and make sure they aren't hiding any eggs on me. Thanks!!

Why aren't my hens laying yet?

Thanks for the response! They do have a fenced in area but it's not too big (probably 12 ft by 30 ft) and I haven't found any stray eggs. They also sleep (I'm guessing by the amount of poop) in their nesting boxes. My coop has 3 roosts and 8 bird capacity. I only have 6.

Why aren't my hens laying yet?

I have 6 5.5 month old hens of various breeds. None of shown any signs of laying. I did get them not long ago from a very nice home but they weren't feeding them the best food. Mostly scratch and corn. I have started them in purina layena pellets. They free range in a small fenced in yard when...
