Comment by 'mhainz' in article 'What Happens When Chickens Molt?'

I have a Black Australorp (about 5 years old) who has just started her molt. She's gone very shy (never been like that before) and has also gone off her food to a degree. I'd expect her appetite to be ravenous but she only seems to like greens and oats. Other than this her behaviour is quite...

Weird looking eggs from both my chooks.

Thank you. The eggs ARE quite large so I'll crack one open to see if its a double yolk.

Weird looking eggs from both my chooks.

Hi there. I have 2 chickens; one a black Australorp and the other an Australorp / something else cross. They are both about 2 years old and are great little layers. Recently though I've gotten the odd weird looking egg. At first I thought it was just the one hen but today they both laid these...

Chook laid one egg, then .... nothing!

Hi all. I have a 19week old hen. I think she's a black sex-link. Anyway a couple of days after Christmas I noticed she'd laid a shell-less egg in the coop. We'd had a couple of day close to 40deg C plus the rooster was harassing her quite a bit so I wasn't too fussed as I'd read that this can...

    Show off your roosters

Well after several weeks in denial, this is my boy Boris (the chicken formerly known as Doris!)

When Doris turns out to be Boris.

He is a lovely boy. He loves being held (once you manage to catch him that is!) Luckily he doesn't crow at full capacity yet. And he only seems to crow while in the chicken coop before he's let out.

When Doris turns out to be Boris.

No. Just a normal suburban block and even if Doris / Boris could be stopped from crowing, I just don't have the room for a "harem" of hens.

When Doris turns out to be Boris.

Well it looks like the good folks here at BYC were right despite my naiive hope that all would be ok. I got these chooks as hatchlings from a kindergarten program. Somehow I always had my suspicions about the black one being a cockerel. Anyway as they grew the white one (Doris) started...

    Post Pics, Of You Chicks!!!

Here are my girls Doris and Loretta foraging in the backyard. When younger everyone was telling me that the white one (Doris) was a cockerel. Well they're at about 14 weeks now and still no "cock-a-doodle-doo" so I'm pretty confident they're both ladies.

    What breeds could these be?

Thanks so much for all the replies. I sure hope everyone's wrong about the cockerel though. Looks like I'll have a tough decision to make in the future...

    What breeds could these be?

No these chicks were hatched at a Kindergarten program from eggs and i got them at 2 weeks of age. I knew there was a chance of roosters. Was just really hoping for girls...

    What breeds could these be?

Hi there. Well my (hopefully) girls are about 7 weeks old now and I'm wondering about the breeds. The hatchery from where the eggs came, stock Australorp, New Hampshire Sussex, B + W Leghorns and Lohmann / Isa Browns. I'm thinking the black one could be an Australorp? No idea about the...

My Chicks will only eat Chick Starter

Hi there. First time chicken daddy here. My chicks are about 4 weeks old now and will only eat the Chick Starter crumble. I've read of people giving their chicks greens and other "treats" but mine show absolutely no interest in anything else. I've even tried chopped raisins, corn, and a...
