    Brooder Expansion ideas?

We've got the largest rubbermaid container we could find, but quickly our 8 baby chicks (2 weeks) are getting too big. Any idea how to make the existing brooder bigger? We thought about cutting a whole in the side and making a "tunnel" over to another box or another container to increase the...

    Chickens got loose!

So a strong gust of wind yesterday decided that we'd start an experiment with free range a bit early....while everyone was off at work (it removed a section of the wall). Haven't seen the chickens yet (all about 8-11 weeks). We left their heat lamp on yesterday and again to night. So far no...

    Can you rent farmland?

I'm currently reading "Hobby Farming for Dummies" and the author seems to suggest that you can lease farmland. She references agriseek.com, but I did not find it particularly helpful in finding that kind of information. Anyone know how to find some farm leasing opportunities in the local area?

Talk Radio. Does it work as a predator deterrent?

I've seen a few posts about people putting on talk radio to keep predators away. Has anyone actually done this, does it actually work, and what kind of predators do you have where you are.

Please Post pics of Gravity Feeders/Waterers

Wondering if people could post pictures of gravity feeders or waterers they've used and how successful they've been to keep the poop out and the feed/water in. I guess this could also go under "feeding/watering your flock", but I thought it was more design related.

Welsummer, Black Copper Marans, and Australorps

Anyone know a hatchery that sells Welsummer pullets, Black Copper Marans pullets, and Australorp pullets? We are looking to get all 3, but are having trouble finding a place that carries all 3 breeds.

Our new freeze proof gravity waterer....sort of

Took some getting used to, but once the big waterer outside froze, they started using these that we put inside the coop. Keeps from freezing, and they don't seem to be able to poop in it like the other ones

Racoon Security (how dexterous are they?)

Pretty confident in my overall run/coop security, but have a question on if a racoon could get in my run gate or coop door?

Can you cross Buff Orpington with Easter Egger?

We have a young pair of EEs that we think may have one turn out to be a rooster. If that does happen, can an EE mate with and produce an offpsring with Buff Orpingtons? That is what most of our current hens are. Or is it more likely that he (assuming it is a he, of course) would favor the...

    Sexlink or Australorp?

We've got 3 Orpingtons, 2 EEs (hoping they are pullets...we'll see ). In spring, we're looking to get Black Australorps, Welsummers, and Partridge Wyandottes. Our primary concern is overall "fun" and the flock has to be able to bear confinement well (we've got a coop and a fairly decent sized...

    Standard Breed & Bantam

Is there every any instance where you can mix standard breeds with bantams? We are not in a position to seperate them, so would our standard sized birds just be too mean on them?

    Chicken Coop reviews

So, I've purchased a few coop designs, mostly before finding BYC. Here is what I found. Not sure if there is a coop plan review section, but if there is, I can put this thing over. This is based on Chicken Tractors only: Catawba Coop: Pretty Easy Plans, but it did not turn out the way we...

    buildingachickencoop.com problems

buildingachickencoop.com I emailed them twice to get a refund, since I did not find their materials particularly helpful. Anyone know who they are or how to contact them? I certainly don't want to try to contact BBB, but it is pretty frustrating. Anyone else have problems?

Really big eggs with stuff in them

Second Egg I've had that has been really big (sorry, forgot picture while still in the shell). There is some other material in there that I cannot identify. Maybe extra shell material that got inside the egg? Shell was soft. I cooked it with another egg from a different hen to see the...

    Roo or Pullet EE?

Got two of them. Suspected one of possibly being a Roo, now I think they both might be. The one with out tail feathers had them removed through the fence by the Dog. They are 14 weeks old.

    Weak Egg Yolk Wall

We recently got our hens already at laying age, so we have only had about a dozen and a half eggs in the past two weeks, but a couple of them have have the yolk wall break when we put them into a pan. Is there something they need more in their diet to prevent this? Is there any harm to eating...

Anyone actually MOVE their Tractor very often?

For those of you with Chicken Tractors, do you actually move it often? I've looked at gobs and gobs of pictures of tractors, with wheels, without wheels, A-frams, detachable runs, etc. But I keep thinking they can't be all that easy to actually move. And if they aren't easy to move it will end...
