Pullets are 28 weeks and still not laying!!

I have one 28-week-old hyline brown (or red shaver), one 28-week-old wyandotte and a leghorn-rhode island red cross who is a a bit younger. All girls, no eggs. They're well fed, free-ranging and extremely spoilt chickens so I just don't understand it! It is coming into winter in the southern...

How do you get chickens to lay in a nest?

My birds free range around our garden and have to be persuaded with treats to even sleep in their coop. I think they're going to start laying in 1-2 weeks but how will I get them to use a nest? I can already tell they're going to be the kind of chickens who lay their eggs in the compost heap...

Yup he's only 17 weeks old. And extremely naughty. Thank you all for your help.

Am I a Faverolles or not?

Um....so is Ethel a boy or a girl? I'm new to this chicken game, the genetics argument is way over my head

Our Barred Rock 'hen' just started crowing this morning.... uh oh.

Don't worry about being in denial. I had three of barred rocks older than that and didn't admit they were roosters even when they started crowing. Every morning. At 5am. I convinced myself they were just crowing hens - read on the internet that it can happen - and it took a intervention from my...

Am I a Faverolles or not?

Meet Ethel. We think she's a Faverolles rooster but are not sure. She was supposed to be a hen (hence the name) but has begun crowing this week. I'd love advice on what sort of Faverolles she/he is -- and a confirmation of sex! Unfortunately if she's a roo we'll have to sell her If it helps...

Are these barred rock hens or roosters?

Thank you to everyone for all your helpful (if depressing) advice. Derek, Mildred and Dulcie (or should I say Derek, Milton and Dougal) will now be auctioned off on New Zealand's E-bay to the highest bidder. Or given away to anyone who wants them really. Any tips on breeds that can be sexed at...

Are these barred rock hens or roosters?

I just looked up cuckoo marans on the internet. Is there any chance Derek could be a cuckoo maran hen? He hasn't made any crowing noises yet. Or am I holding out false hopes?

Are these barred rock hens or roosters?

Oh no! I can't believe it! Not only does everyone think they are roosters, but Derek isn't even a quality barred rock. I got them from a local chicken breeder who I found on line. I'm so sad, they're such nice birds. Shall I sell them now or wait a little longer to make 100 per cent sure?

how to get your roo to eat out of your hand

I didn't know when I got mine that they were going to be so naughty. Yesterday I left the shed door open and Derek the hen got in and dragged a little bag of maize out then proceeded to tear it to bits! I had to rescue her before she ate the plastic too

Are these barred rock hens or roosters?

Three months ago I bought three day-old barred rock chicks. Their names are Derek, Dulcie and Mildred. They were all supposed to be girls and the name Derek was just a joke because we thought he was the most masculine. However, the joke is turning out not to be so funny because SOMEBODY has...

    Kia Ora from New Zealand

Hi I'm Kirsty and I'm brand new to chickens. I'm 23, from New Plymouth, New Zealand and I'm a journalist here. I got chickens because I wasn't allowed a kitten and now I'm completely addicted. My boyfriend loves them too even though he thinks I'm mad for giving them names. And even though...
