We now have 7 pipped eggs and 1 hatch. I think I may have one pipper that has died, the shell is becoming discolored, so if no progress tomorrow, it will be tossed. I expect to see 7 more duckies by tomorrow morning. Here is a pic of the first one to hatch, resting in his warm enclosure.
OK, here are pics of my SWH ducks, male and female, resting on the tall grass mounds. They like their morning and afternoon naps, a quick swim in their little pond (very little but fed 24/7 by an artesian spring) several times per day, and of course food. I feed them chick starter/grower...
I have been raising Silver Welsh Harlequins for over a year and I really do enjoy them. Lay eggs every day. Don't fly. Not very noisy. Good meat. What's not to like? And they eat snails!:ya
Checked all the eggs yesterday, had one that had to go, so down to 10 and all are moving and twitching with the light. Tomorrow is lock-down and I am getting their "new hatch-lings" quarters ready as our weather is very iffy, so they will be inside for at least a week.
Candled my eggs today, had to toss one, so now I'm down to 11 viable eggs and some are quite sensitive to the light when candled. Moving along quite well! Have 7 days to go, more or less. Time to start working on the "hatching & drying" area. Our weather is very undependable, so I will have...
You have no idea how many folks don't think a rooster is necessary. My daughter (a paramedic!!!) didn't know the answer. She was totally bored in Biology class, I guess, because the whole thing of plant sex and chicken sex was wayyyyy over her head...until we moved to our farm. DH once had her...
You need a much more powerful light to see through those brown shells. Find a flashlight with super powerful led lights, turn of all other lights (in the closet works good) and make sure no light leaks between the egg-TP roll.
Candled the two suspect eggs today and they look exactly like all the other eggs, so I have 12 well on their way to becoming ducklings. All the pictures I have found on the net show a full egg shell, but all my eggs have gravitated to 1/2 of the shell with veining, etc, and the other half is...
Ok, here is a pic of my hatching set-up, which I keep in the tack room of the barn. 2 Brinsea Minis, plus all the supplies/equipment needed when they finally hatch out. Note my Avatar has changed to show one of my duck eggs candled this morning. Titan candler is in the middle.
Titan high intensity egg candler. Got it on Amazon. Really bright light, so if you are candling dark shelled eggs, it will work. When I candle the eggs again in a few days, I'll get a pic and post it here.
My new egg candler arrived today (LOVE IT) so naturally I rushed up to the tack room to candle all my soon-to-be-ducklets. Only had 1 that was a dud, never got fertilized. Have three that are *maybe* so it will take another few days before I can check them again. Also I only set 14 eggs...
I would give them a heaping tablespoon per day of Brewers Yeast mixed into their food dish. It will help prevent growth problems, and won't harm them. I did this for my 7 ducks for their first 6 months, they thrived and grew quite fast. Get it at the grocery store.
I let my SWH ducks out so they can roam our 2 acre yard and they are good bug eaters. Worms, bugs, flies, grubs, those ducks love their protein! They do quack but not very loud. They need a pond or kiddie pool (hard plastic which must be dumped and refilled at least every other day. Kept in...
Today I put 18 SWH duck eggs in my 2 little Brinsea Mini Incubators. First day is just warm-up for bators and eggs since they all were chilly at 46 degrees F. Last year I had great success with these bators so I'm looking forward to good results again this year. Am using my tack room again...
