    What's wrong with my chick?

So, in your estimation, do you think she had cocci? I ended up, in a last ditch effort to keep her warm, putting her in the incubator last night. I had to separate her, while this was going on, and that's the last place I had. Otherwise, she most likely would have chilled herself to death...

    What's wrong with my chick?

I have tried dipping her head in water to drink. She will tip her head back and drink. I went to the store and got an eye dropper today. I got home and mixed some sugar water, and she did take that. I also used the dropper to try giving her some medicated starter (the food she has been on...

    What's wrong with my chick?

I've got a baby Barred Plymouth Rock that has something wrong, but I don't know what. She hasn't grown like the others. She's lethargic. She acts like she's hot, because she keeps her wings open partially, when she's laying down. She sleeps all the time. When she stands, her wing feathers are...

    Which chicks to get...

I appreciate all the help. I think I have a pretty good idea what I'm going to do, after taking your counsel in mind. I'm really loving my time on BYC. Thanks to all, once again. Good night, and God bless!

    RIP April

I understand what you're saying. If we didn't care about the animals that God has given us to care for, then we'd be most pitiable. Having love and compassion just shows us the tenderness of our heart. I believe you'll be with April again someday. My thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless...

Chicken Names- whats your chickens name?

My Red is named Miracle, because she is one. She survived an attack from a coyote...with my help. It's how we came to be friends. Now she is my buddy...pictured with me. And my Easter Egger juvenile rooster is named Caramel Jr. (his dad is Caramel Sr.), named from the person who gave him to...

    Which chicks to get...

Thank you all for the great words of wisdom. I've got a few weeks before I order, so I think I'll chew on the information, before I put my order in. I do like the idea of different breeds though. It would be easier to tell them apart. Good idea Donrae

    Which chicks to get...

Thank you Bobbi-J. I appreciate your time. I think I'm with you on that. I'd like to get to the point of eating my own. I'm just not there yet. I realize that some chickens, like Miracle, will be able to have a free ride...and others will have to be eaten. You're right, I'd rather eat...

    Which chicks to get...

Thank you all for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I'm determined to have some birds around. I'm also a nature and wildlife photographer, so it will be good to have new photos to share with you all. I'm not sure what a Production Red is, but thank you. Is that a mixed breed "Red"?

    Which chicks to get...

I guess I'll have to rethink this eating thing. I'm definitely eating the eggs, and sharing them with friends. I was thinking I could share more with people that want fresh eggs, and maybe even take some to the local farmer's market. I don't mind people eating chickens. I eat chicken...just...

    Which chicks to get...

I'm relatively new to raising chickens. It all started with an injured chicken for me. She got attacked by a coyote and lived (see my profile picture). We didn't think she was going to make it. Her right eye was bit and pussy, her beak was twisted sideways, and her side was bit. She...

    What got my chickens **GRAPHIC**

It looks like it could be a coyote to me. Had that before. I did notice that your fencing was pretty loose near the bottom stud. I always put a smaller and tighter, usually 1/2 x 1/2" fence over my chicken wire. That makes it harder for predators to get my babies. Hope this has been helpful...
