So, we have been free-ranging for the past year or so, but due to a stealth fox using our lawn as its own personal drive-thru this spring, we recently built an enclosed run. However (and yes, I realized we should have started with this, but too late now), I need to add drainage.

So I have a breeding trio of BCMs but I also wanted a mixed flock so I've acquired some blue ameraucanas (pure) and a few chocolate orpingtons.
We mostly have them for hatching eggs and because I wanted some darker colour eggs, but it got me curious in case we ever did hatch some of our own...
Update! 7 week old photos... it's looking like we've got ourselves a cockerel but if you think there's any chance he's still a pullet let me know! He carries himself like a roo based on my limited experience as well. Now whether to pick up a few more black copper marans... he's our only one...
Good to know (on the comb). I have kiddos so obviously if the disposition is an issue it becomes a non-starter/easy decision. I'd rather it be a hen for the eggs anyhow ;) it just got me dreaming about future flocks so I was curious. I don't think we'd do any serious breeding but I'd like the...
Please any guesses? (thanks to the one voter!). I know where's tons of these posts.... I'm happy either way. I just need a distraction from some not-so-fun human stuff going on... I'm also trying to sex our two gold laced wyandottes (9 weeks) as I'm starting to think one might be a cockerel...
Okay I went a little pic crazy, but you get the idea. He is 5 weeks today (Monday) so these are all taken at 4.5 weeks. I didn't notice until just now that his comb seems to be getting redder. ****.
I was so sure this was a pullet but he's showing sons of being a roo... give me your best guess based on appearance. Has had a big tail from the start, comb has been contuously yellow and not changed much. I mostly want to know because we picked up an Ameraucana (barnyard mix but carries the...
Oh yeah, I'm looking now and I think I do remember her referring to one as a white and the colours match up right with that chick. The other looks to be blue, maaaaybe splash but I know blue was one she had listed so that's most likely. Even if they are EEs I don't mind a bit of blending, I...
Thanks, I will do that for sure. It's funny, I was thinking the copper might be a cockerel too... he is the most charismatic of the chicks, just like my current/first roo. I wouldn't mind taking a run at breeding some marans (I have a white maran and a cuckoo maran pullet), but I'd really love...
I think you are all right. I thought they were a reputable breeder but i've since learned things about their operation that have made me question them quite a bit. I checked my receipt and sure enough there are no colours for the ameraucanas.... she did have some blue and blue wheaten (too...
