Hi,
I was just wondering if having a rooster in the coop affects egg production. We have 9 hens and one very horny rooster. 5 of the hens are still too young to lay but the others should be. I spend too much money on chicken feed to still have to buy eggs at the grocery store!! If the...
Hey everyone,
I cleaned out my chicken coop the other day and added some fresh wood shavings to the floor. I didn't touch their normal laying spots where there is straw. Two days in a row they've removed all of the straw from their laying areas and spread it on the floor. Are they protesting...
The chicks are about two weeks old. The smaller coop is completely enclosed, but with chicken wire with standard sized holes. The chicks could get their heads through the holes but not their bodies (I don't think!). Today I added a layer of really small mesh fencing. I suppose it could have...
Hey everyone,
We bought 5 new chicks on Sunday and put them in a smaller pen inside the chicken coop. On Monday morning all 5 were accounted for but on Monday night one was completely gone. Here are the theories:
1. She stuck her little head through the chicken wire and the rooster pulled her...
THANKS EVERYONE! That was a lot of fun! I think we'll try dominating him some more and doing some behavior modification and if that doesn't work we'll just bash him over the head with a shovel and have a nice dinner!
My Rooster is evil! When we let the flock out into the yard he attacks the cat, the kids and the adults. Is there a way to modify his behavior so that he won't attack? We usually fight back and to show our dominance but this isn't really working. Any ideas?
We just got 6 baby chicks, 1 week old. One is much smaller than the others, has no feathers on it's bottom and has poo constantly stuck on her. Also small amount of blood coming out. Should we separate her from the others? Will she die?
How cold is too cold for a chicken? We've been below freezing, low 30's and the coop is not very weather-proof. Two large windows but we did put down some wood chips and lined their laying areas. Should we cover the large windows with plastic sheeting or will they be okay in these temps? It...
I'm at a loss at to what is happening. We haven't had an egg in 4 days and every morning there are a lot of feathers on the bottom of the chicken coop. It sounds like something is getting into the coop every night, but there is no sign of entry or egg remnants. The coop has chicken wire on...
