    stopped laying

Could it have something to do with the weather? It is getting warmer here. We got 4 pullets (not sure what, but probably Red Star) mid April and we were getting an average of 3.5+ eggs a day. Four days ago we started only getting 3 eggs a day and today it was down to 2! First time for that...

    Best Way To Train Dogs?

Hi, I've been reading all the threads on problems with dogs and chickens. We just got chickens a couple weeks ago. They are pullets and laying already. I have two small dogs--13# and 23#. We kept the chickens in a run for a couple weeks and then when we started free ranging them, I kept the...

Any way to get them to lay where you want them to?

@migocontodos~ : It would work best and faster if you could/would confine them to the coop for a week or better, even two. They will begin to lay in them (most likely) and will continue after you start turning them back out. Also, putting the nest in the dimly lite place will work too. Hens do...

Any way to get them to lay where you want them to?

Quote: That might be a good idea. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do that? Should it cover the whole door, or half-way down? How would I attach it? I have one of those metal nest boxes that are 5 across and 2 high (10 boxes in all). I'd attach a picture if I knew how. Thanks.

Any way to get them to lay where you want them to?

Well, I do have golf balls in the nesting boxes so that's not helping.

Any way to get them to lay where you want them to?

I am wondering if there's any enticement I can add to my nesting boxes to make them lay there . . . and/or Is there any way I can stop them from laying somewhere else? Our hens have nice nesting boxes with good, CLEAN hay in them. Lately all but one of them is laying in a corner of the barn...

    Bloody Chicken Head

My chickens are free range. They are in a big barn and can go anywhere they want, whenever they want--even outside. Why would I need to separate them? And how would I separate them? If they can get away from each other at will, how are they able to do that much harm to one of them? Wouldn't the...

    Bloody Chicken Head

You didnt mention if there is a rooster in the bunch. If there is, he might be the culprit. The Roo will grab the hen by the back of the neck/comb area..and "hold on " to mate. No, no rooster. I'm wondering, is this something common that chickens do? I've never seen them picking on each other.

    Bloody Chicken Head

Hi Everyone, I have six white leghorn hens about 6 months old. They are free range and never confined (even at night--they roost inside the barn). About 3-4 weeks ago, I noticed one of them had a dark, purplish looking head. My husband thought it might be dried blood but wasn't sure. It didn't...

we ate our first eggs... question

Yes, it is normal for the eggs to be thick (and a little cloudy, too), as well as the shell. Being thick is a GOOD thing. It is a sign that the eggs are fresh. It will take you longer to fry them because they sit so high up. (If you get an egg that when you crack it, it runs all over the pan...

    PA are there actions/swaps

Quote: If you ever remember what day they are can you tell us? and the place exactly? They have their auction every Monday. It goes all day. They start with miscellaneous, then go to vegetables, eggs, poultry, calves, cows, pigs and sheep. You might be able to just happen to get some...

    Frozen Eggs!!!!

Hi everyone, We are having VERY cold weather here. It was 4 when we got up this morning and it is 14 now--our high for today. When I went down to collect the eggs, guess what? They are frozen! :o Two had cracked already. Once thawed, can these eggs be eaten? If so, why wouldn't everyone...

Merry Christmas to Me . . . From My Chickens!!!

Finally!!!! After two months (got 6 of them October 21st), I got my first 2 eggs today! I'm so excited! I usually go down every day and feed, water, etc. but I was so wrapped up (pardon the pun) in Christmas details, my husband did it for me today. Late this afternoon I said something about...

Still not laying -- any suggestions?

Hi all, Thanks for your posts. I'm really excited and have to tell you what happened today. I went down to the barn with the heat lamp/light to plug it in and figure out the best way to set it up, etc. It drew the birds like a magnet. They came right over to investigate and immediately...
