    Light Sussex cockerals (North CA)

Last call on these birds. I had hoped there would be a few more takers that were interested in the breed. They will be available through 5/18.

    Coronation Sussex Thread!

Sorry to hear about the heat loss. We can get 105+ days here so I have that challenge too. Thank you for the input. Hopefully they will mellow out when the hormones kick in. Good luck with your hatch!:jumpy

    Coronation Sussex Thread!

Hello-I recently hatched some Coronation and Light Sussex. Up until now I only previously had speckled. I got very lucky and looks like I have 2 Cor. pullets. Not so lucky that all the Light are boys. My question: the Coronation seem much more shy and timid by comparison. I don't know if this is...

What is your favorite chicken breed?

Fave overall - Sussex! Docile and inquisitive. Love them. bonus - a winter layer. Fave for egg color - EE. I've tried others but keep coming back to EE because of personality and those fun muffs.(cutest chicks ever btw) Eggs - I am a recent convert to sex links (I have both gold and black)...

    Light Sussex cockerals (North CA)

To clarify: the coronation Sussex that you see in the background are not for sale (yet). These chicks have been raised on organic feed so they are on their way to being an organic table bird if you don't need a docile rooster. Full grown males are about 9 lb.

    Help with breed ID

Curious which ones were the bantams? Bantams are usually sold straight run because they are too fragile to sex. Guessing they were feather sexed somehow which might be a clue to the breed.

    Capon service in CA

How much did he charge to do a capon? I'm resurrecting this thread to see if anyone else might have info. I've looked around thinking that this is the type of thing the UC poultry extension would offer classes on but I can find nothing. It is a shame more vets do not have an interest in this...

What do you do with all those eggs?

I usually freeze eggs in batches marked for specific uses. My FAVORITE S are lemon and lime curds. When the fruits are in season, I make big batches. (Or you can do the reverse: freeze the juice and make the curd in spring.) Other faves that use a lot of eggs: French toast, frittata, quiche...

    Help with breed ID

Pics showing their legs/feet would help. Breeds have different leg coloring.

    Light Sussex cockerals (North CA)

I have five Light Sussex cockerals that will be 8 weeks on Mothers Day weekend. We live near Sacramento and <10 minutes from both Hwy 99 and I5 for easy pickups. These were purchased hatching eggs.

What do you do with all those eggs?

Have you already frozen some? We are always swimming in eggs in the spring, but by July, the heat drops production and inevitably one eventually does a stress molt.

    Requirements for a Ducky backyard?

I have the same problem with the chickens. I've even tried reading aloud to them from The Book of Chicken but they still won't behave! Thank you all for the replies and input. I appreciate it, especially breed rec'd and need for designated splash pan.. Lots of food for thought. Bummed about...

    Requirements for a Ducky backyard?

I have a few chickens in our backyard in the city. I would love to add a few ducks but I would like advice on whether my yard is too small. Part of it is already taken up by a fenced garden and the chicken yard. We have a teeny tiny pond (like 3x3) they could use to take a dip but really...
