Thanks for the links Annarie!
Those are some beautiful cochins. I'll get some more research done and see what I can come up with. We are interested in standard sized cochins btw, although I have to admit, those lavender bantam cochins were very cool.
I have been reading up on genes and the lavender color intrigues me. The wife and I both love the blue cochins and I've been thinking lavender cochins would be a cool chicken project. However I need a chicken that carries the lavender gene if I decide to start this project.
So... Is anyone...
So I managed to hatch 24 chicks from 42 eggs. I tried candling, but wound up just leaving all 42 in there for the duration of the hatching session. One of the chicks was a little runty and died its first night. I kinda saw it coming. The other 23 are doing very well and with any luck, most...
5 out of 10 the first time around isn't really that bad. My first hatch I had 48 eggs (I never candled) and only had 6 hatch. One of my major mistakes was opening the incubator constantly to take out every new chick that hatched... I know better now... lol
Stop turning on day 18... and... don't open the incubator! I've got chicks hatching right now and its very hard not to open it up, but its for the good of the eggs that haven't hatched yet. Looking way back to my first hatch years ago, I know this was one of the things I really messed up on.
The last photo is a little hard to make out, but there are three chicks all huddled together next to my thermometer.
Now I best get back to the show... lol
I've heard that a standard water heater thermostat can vary by as much as 10°F. I was going to test out modifying one like this: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=26580-thermostat-modification to see if it'll work as claimed.
You may want to point that out to hubby, he may...
Nice
How well is the water heater thermostat working for you? Did you do the modification on it (ie: drill holes in it)? I'm in the process of testing one out and am curious about them. I know there are a lot of people who say they won't work.
Thanks
I finally managed to pry my nose away from the incubator. So far I have two chicks hatched, two that should be out any time, and 4 more pipped. So far so good!
First one is out!!!
I came home from picking my daughter up from preschool and we went right away to check the eggs. One had already zipped and was moving around a lot. We watched it for about 10 minutes and it finally came out around 11:50am. I'm pretty sure it's the first time she's seen...
So many things can happen in 24 hours...
I disabled the turner yesterday morning and put the incubator on lockdown. I also noticed that morning that my favorite roo was acting funny. I was worried about him, but had to go to town, so I hoped he would be fine. By the time I came home, my...
I was so bummed yesterday... My roo was acting funny yesterday morning and I was really worried about him. I had to leave for town and by the time I came home, he had passed away. I'm not sure what was wrong with him, he showed no signs of injury. I did notice his comb/wattles looked a...
Me and my daughter were out with the chickens yesterday and decided to give them some popcorn. My favorite black rooster just stared at the popcorn and made a funny clucking noise. Then we saw the hens come running and ate it. He did that several times. So I tried hand feeding him a piece...
Tie a red handkerchief to his tail feathers and let him go... It's quite entertaining, and it'll take the fight out of any rooster for quite awhile. Way better than any TV show.
I write the dates I collected the eggs on the big end. That way the dates are readily visible in the carton, and no question about how old they are. I use a regular number 2 pencil.
