Phase 2 of new coop. We attached a covered run. I will put hardware cloth along the bottom just to assure no preditors can grab the chickens. Had to get things together because we are going on vacation and will only have morning and evening checks.
It's been really hot in my neck of the woods too, Illinois. I did put a fan in the coop and I'm doing frozen bottles of water. They really like laying against it. I also put a dog cooling mat in a pillow case and through it in the coop.

Ok here is the ground work my husband did for preparing for the new coop.
4x4's frame re-rods pounded into the ground to keep it from shifting. 1 ton of rock then the coop was placed on top.
Then I black jacked the floor.
I was sooooo worried about winter now I am sure they will be happy and safe!!
Now our job is constructing the run. I will keep posting that progress too
I started this chicken journey with a tractor coop. The wood began to split after one week outside........placed outside on Mother's Day. I live in Illinois and we've had a lot of rain.
Hinged roof came off in my hands.....enough chickens deserve better. New coop coming...can't wait!

UPDATE.....the tractor coop I bought and that has been outside for a week, is falling apart! I decided to order an Amish made 7x8 coop. SO the DLM will work just perfect in my new coop.

Maybe I could do a mini version of deep litter, by changing it all out a few times a year versus once a year.
I think there is about 2 1/2- 3 feet of height in there. I'll measure to be sure.
Very informative thread. I have a tractor coop that sits on a cement patio. So the upstairs, the coop, has the door in the floor to go down to the small fun below.
There are two low roosting bars with a clean out drawer below, 3 nesting boxes and one the opposite side just some square footage...
