Thank you! That's what I thought. ;-) Also, is it true that I would be able to see little spurs forming on their legs if it's a cockerel? I think I might have second cockerel in my flock if this is the case. :-/
We got 8 chicks about 8 weeks ago and I'm thinking this one is a cockerel. He has a large comb and very different coloring than the rest of the girls. I'd like to see what you all think before I look into giving him away. We're not allowed roosters where I live. He hasn't crowed... yet. Thanks...
Thanks, everyone, for the good tips! I will check the nest box and put out some oyster shell to be safe. I won't worry about egg pecking unless I find more holes.
And thanks for the nails compliments! Unfortunately, they are attached to pudgy, wrinkly fingers. lol I have my mom and...
Hi there, I collected eggs this morning and found one with a hole in it. Does it look like it was pecked, or maybe just happened to occur naturally? Any ideas? I think it came from my speckled sussex who just started laying on Christmas. They are on layer food, so it shouldn't be calcium...
She is officially a hen!! She laid her (and our very first) egg today!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She was the first to lay out of our 6 girls (all different breeds).
@ Pat: well, I figured since I was getting straw for the garden experiment, I would just put some in the nest boxes too - I've heard it's better than pine shavings, but maybe not? I'm a little afraid they might eat it now! I did just buy a HUGE bag of pine shavings, I might just keep using...
I'm going to get some straw for my two nest boxes (6 chickens 20 wks old - not laying yet). I currently have pine shavings in there, but I wanted to get straw since they will (hopefully) be laying soon. The place closest to me sells rye and wheat straw. Which one is better? I'm also going to...
And thanks, Tim, for getting back to me so quickly! :-)
and we built our "fancy coop" using the garden coop plans. http://www.thegardencoop.com/ Took us 4-5 weekends, but it's finally done! :-)
I wish I had another brahma in my flock to compare her to! I've got all different breeds. :-\\ Thanks for all the feedback! She is a standard size, and yes, 8 weeks old. She was the slowest to feather in (but again, all different breeds!). She was a little weak after she shipped and she...
I will definitely wait until I hear a crow before re-homing, but I REALLY hope she's a girl! My australorp started crowing, so I knew for sure... I don't think my 3 year old can handle giving away another rooster... neither can I! Please please please be a girl!
she came from mpc as a pullet, but she's getting so red in the face I'm scared! I already have to give away our australorp which turned out to be a boy. :-(
thanks for your help!
(sorry, that last pic was wrong)
here's a pic of the size difference
she's laying down in the cage, so she looks even smaller. but maybe she'll be ok, I don't know. She is a cutie though, that tail gives her some flair, lol.
Thank you, I forgot to add that she came from a hatchery as an easter egger - her tail is just cracking me up though! It looks so funny! And I didn't realize how much smaller she was till she was next to mine. I don't have anywhere else to put her until she gets bigger. :-( I think I'll put...
