IMMEDIATE Advice Requested - chicks hatching (Problem Solved)

Well, we just found the first chick that hatched (dead of course) up by our house. We let the chickens range today, not knowing there was a chick hatched. It's too bad, but at least now we know that she didn't eat her chick.

IMMEDIATE Advice Requested - chicks hatching (Problem Solved)

3-Hour Later UPDATE: One of the other eggs is starting to hatch, so I took it out and put it in the box with chick. We have them in the garage where it is really hot, so we shut off the light for right now and will turn it back on later this evening after it has cooled down some more. DH...

IMMEDIATE Advice Requested - chicks hatching (Problem Solved)

Our hen that hatched chicks last year with no problem has been sitting on four eggs. When I went to get eggs this evening, all that was left of one of the eggs was the shell; there was no chick to be found. A second egg was trying to hatch, and my DH advised over the phone that I help the...

    New to the Flock

The only way I could do that is if I put her down below with the bantam hen and chicks, but since they don't know each other, I'm guessing that wouldn't go over very well. What is your reason for suggesting they be separated from the others? (I'm learning)

    New to the Flock

We have leghorns, buff orpingtons, and amongst them are two roosters (one of each breed, named Fozzie and Foghorn). Our coop is lifted to that there the run also goes under the coop. So some neighbors had a bantam hen hatch 8 eggs; they hatched approximately June 14th. Out of fear of them...

QUICK! What household food to feed chicks

So somebody in our house forgot to buy chick feed today (hopefully he'll remember tomorrow). Chicks are with mamma hen; we just got them today, but the chicks are about days old. They have water, and I scrambled some eggs for all of them to eat. What else can I feed them that I might have...

    Egglaying

UPDATE: A week ago we butchered 4 chickens, freeing up some space and now giving us 14. Now we have 3 leghorn hens, 1 leghorn rooster, 1 buff rooster, and 9 buff hens. I apparently haven't been feeding them enough either, so I doubled their feed last week. Since doing so, I noticed that one...

    Dog vs Chicken

So there are a zillion ways people have dealt with dogs (whether it's theirs or a neighbor's) trying to get chickens, so I personally thought it would be nice to have all these different ways in one spot so that way people don't keep posting the same question (How do you deal with dogs trying to...

    Butcher

Thanks. Husband was wanting to fry him. That's the only way he'll eat chicken, and I don't like chicken at all. I'm a beef kind of lady! :)

    Egglaying

Ok, so here are some pictures. They kept moving and pecking at my toes. lol I have seen them lay in one spot out in the shed, and I always check there for eggs but haven't ever seen any there except for 2 times. Otherwise, the kiddos and I always look around outside for them. As we speak, I...

    Butcher

Thanks! I'll have to tell hubby to get on it (in all the free time he doesn't have) then because he was wanting to fry him.

    Egglaying

Just about every day I let them out. I let the dogs run around for a while, and then I put them away and let the chickens out till mid-afternoon. The hens still lay in the nesters, at all times of the day, despite being out to roam. I would say their combs and wattles are fully developed, or...

    Butcher

Ok, so we have 20 chickens, and three of these are roosters. The buff's were hatched April 2nd. I am unsure of what day the leghorns were hatched, but they're all close in age. We have 2 leghorn roosters and the 3rd is a buff. My question is, when do we butcher and eat the 2nd leghorn...

    Egglaying

Ok, so we have 20 chickens, and three of these are roosters (yes, one of these roosters is scheduled to be eaten, but that's for another thread). 4 hens are white leghorns and the other hens are buff orpingtons. The buff's were hatched April 2nd. I am unsure of what day the leghorns were...

    Keeping dogs away

Did you ever find a solution? I was going to suggest shooting a gun in the air, if the dog is gun shy, but I see this post is from 2009? I'm trying to figure out how to keep our outside done from pestering our chickens. He's a tough dog and must of a high tolerance of pain (he fights and...

How bad is it for dogs to eat chicken poop?

Grew up on a farm. I've seen dogs eat all kinds of things, including but not limited to pig poop, cow poop, sheep poop, dog poop, and cat poop. They always lived to see another day.

    Ducklings & Chicks

Problem solved! Short version: Ducks were put in a chicken tractor. Outside dog tries to destroy chicken tractor to get to the ducks so he can eat them. Ducks get a new home with the great-uncle. lol

    Ducklings & Chicks

Oh, I should probably clarify that the 21 chicks are ours. The 2 ducklings are what belongs to our friends. I know the messy water all over the place is not good for the chicks while they are young, right? We've always used newspaper (it's free ) for the chick's bedding, without any problem...

    Ducklings & Chicks

So my husband volunteered for us (primarily me) to care for our friends' teen daughter's ducklings that she got from a boy. I just got them less than 30 minutes ago. We put them in with the chicks, and the ducks are being bullies (here I thought the chicks would be the bullies and peck at them...
