Hello. I have a broody hen that has hatched babies 3 days ago. This morning she up scratching all over the pen, and has little regard for the babies. She’s stepping on them, and burying them under the straw. She’s a first time broody hen, and I know that not all broody hens make good momma hens...
I appreciate that. I'm pretty sure she's sick, I'll check her chest, but I don't remember seeing any feathers being plucked. I don't know if she's laid any eggs, since our flock is a good size.
I've given her NutiDrench a couple of times today. I guess she might be broody. I've only had chickens for a little over a year, so I'm still learning. Why would she have plucked feathers in her chest if she's broody? She has shown no interest in food or water all day. If she's broody, would her...
This is her. She's one of my boys favorite, I'm still trying to convince my husband to let me get saddled for her and a couple others like her, and I think she's molting, since most of her tail is missing. She hasn't pooped since I've separated her. However she did pop when I checked her vent...
Last night I found one of my girls sitting in one of the nesting boxes. Once I looked at her I noticed that her comb had fallen over, which isn't normal for her. She's been lethargic and I haven't seen her eat or drink. I've separated her and have been treating her as if she was egg bound. I...
This morning when my son let out the chickens, he found one dead. When I went up to investigate, I saw a headless body, with one side of the organs exposed. There was no blood in the coop, and it didn't look like the organs were ate on. One of my girls is limping and missing feathers on her...
We had 25 hens, but we have lost several this winter to predators. With the new additions there will be a total of 45 hens. Right now the girls seem to be holding up pretty good. All of the birds roam roughly 2-2.5 acres daily.
Last summer we ended up with a pullet that actually was a cockeral. We kept him with the knowledge that we would be expanding our flock this year and would need another rooster. He's always been kind of a loner. There's a couple of girls that will hang with him, but he's always been on the...
Hey everybody. This is a non emergency post, a sharing of what I have experienced this past week. This past Tuesday when I went to let my flock out, I had one that looked odd to me. Once I got closer, I realized that she couldn't stand up. I immediately thought Merecks disease and separated her...
So I FINALLY have at least one girl that is laying, my flock is all roughly 6-7 months old, and I have gotten one egg yesterday and today. Since I found it in the same spot, I'm guessing it's from the same girl. So my question is that if the eggs are super clean, do they need to be rinsed off...
It's not that important to me. I don't need purebred, as long as they lay some eggs then I'm happy. If she was a mutt then I'd still be just as happy with her. She's one of the few that will eat our of my hand. She's a sweetie.
I thought that FOR were pretty big birds. She is one of the smallest birds in my flock. I'm not sure of her age, but I'm guessing that she might be a little younger than the rest.
