    Brooder heat plate question?

Can a brooder heat plate effectively keep chicks at 95F when it’s 60F in the garage at night. Do I need to bring them inside? I know there’s a limit to how effective they are in lower temps.

Can I use ivermectin paste to treat ear mites in my dog and cat?

Can I use the ivermectin paste to treat my cat and dog for ear mites? That is, if I can even find it at tractor supply these days. I wouldn’t be surprised if they took it off the shelf because of the Covid stuff. Just trying to save myself a couple hundred dollar vet bill!

Prolapse in my female coturnix- when to give up?

I have been treating this female for a couple of days for prolapse. It seems to have gotten a little better but there is still protrusion. I was reading that people cull if it does not improve after a couple of days, is this best? or should I keep trying? Also, I’ve been soaking her once a day...

My chickens ate Amdros ant bait!

We put Amdro’s ant bait on ant beds in the part of the yard that the chickens cannot reach. Of course, Murphy’s Law kicked in and the chickens managed to find a way in that day. This was over a week ago and I researched it and it says that they would be okay, since they only ingested the portion...

My baby chick had heat stroke help!

My chicks had heat stroke and now are wet because I was cooling it off. How should I dry them? With a towel? Would a hair dryer on low setting just make it worse ? One is lethargic and the other one is walking around, but they are probably getting chilled.

Candling pics- which eggs are good!

Which look viable? I assume that the speckled eggs with no air sac are probably not good?

Slipped tendon - see pictures - did I do it right???

I read all the suggestions for a slipped tendon. Last night the tendon slipped back into place and we wrapped it. But the leg seems swollen and the chick seems more uncomfortable now than before. At least it is doing a lot of peeping. Do you think the tendon is out of place again? I hate to...

Twisted leg on chick, need advice!

Chick hatched yesterday and his leg is slightly twisted and will not straighten, at least not easily. I have not tried to force it, of course. I’m not sure if he was born this way or this is an injury because I had to move the incubator due to a power outage yesterday, immediately after he...

Found my 5-year old hen dead on the roost

I have a Dominique or barred rock mix ( was told barred rock but suspected she was more like a Dominique) Who was five years old. I just found her dead on the roost. No previous symptoms. She was my oldest hen, and sweet. 😢 no signs of injury. Do you think it’s possible she died of old age or do...

    Probably a dumb question, but...

Bear with me this question involves quail : I have an Orpington hen that has been laying on eggs that have not hatched after almost 30 days!! From experience, it is hard to break her broodiness (and I don’t like doing that anyway). So, my thought was maybe I could purchase chicks to put under...

What is the longest you have had a hen sit on eggs and still hatch? As in, past Day 21.

I have heard cooler weather can delay hatching. So what is the longest you have ever observed? (Either under hen or in an incubator)

    Is my broody a bust?

Last summer my hen hatched two sets of chicks, one in May and another set in August. She went broody again a couple weeks back and so I put fertilized eggs under her. Day 22 and no chicks. I noticed that she sometimes would get up and spend a good 15 minutes at least some days off the nest. Last...

    Broody getting bullied?

One of my hens keeps trying to steal the eggs from under my broody hen. She also tries to push her off the nest, or share the nest with her. I have given her eggs to set on in the nesting box next to it, but she won’t stay there, she just continues to harass my broody hen, day and night. She is...

    Quail question!

Has anyone brooded Quail in an actual birdcage, especially when they start flying out of their brooder enclosures? I would worry that they would hurt their heads, but my friend keeps encouraging me to try it. Of course this would just be babies, not adults. I realize that adults need floor...

Can you hatch both silkie and quail eggs under a broody hen - at the same time?

I’ve heard of people hatching quail under chicken hens, But has anyone mixed both together? The broody hen in question is an orpington.

5-year old hen broody for the first time?

Edit: i’ve already been informed that five years old is not old several times. Now back to the topic at hand....My orpington went broody, and my barred rock mix, who is old - five years old! - decided to join her. She has never gone broody before, although my orpington has done so successfully...

    Brooder, homemade incubator, or neither?

I have some eggs currently in the incubator on lockdown. I wanted to go ahead and start another batch. Never mind why LOL. My question is - 1. should I make a temporary homemade incubator out of a Styrofoam cooler? 2. Should I put either set of eggs under with my chick brooder at 100 degrees...

Newly hatched chick cannot stand up - any possible correction?

This chick appears not to be able to stand up, but can scoot around on his little booty. Any idea of how to correct this or if there is any correction?

Help! Hatched quail, but my brooder is not heating properly

I have a comfort chick brand brooder. I plugged it in yesterday and checked today, and it is not very warm, only about 80° under there. I assume that after year of usage it’s just given out. 😡 I have a couple little quail to put under there (first time hatching quail). Do you recommend that I go...
