The next time I checked on the wound, it was wet and oozing puss.
I get out the saline wound spray and rinse it out as well as I can, and put the bird back into the coop.
She's still eating, drinking and generally hiding from the other birds. The wound looks dry and scabbed over, but...
Update.
Put a saddle on her, and it helped, but she still gets her feathers plucked by one of the other chickens.
The last few days she's been hanging out in the nest box. I figured she had just gone broody, and I was ready to let nature run it's course and she'd eventually come out of it...
So I just got home from a few days away, and one of our three birds is missing feathers clear down her back and is a bit bloody.
We noticed her losing feathers sometime in March, and we thought it was just a molt. Chix just turned one year old on March 1st, so we thought it was regular yearly...
I just put a sealed 5 gallon bucket with an aquarium heater in the coop for our three birds. It's supposed to get down in the single digits tonight and tomorrow.
I figure the thermal mass of the water will make the coop temps change slower than just popping on (or off) a heat lamp. The only...
I brew my own beer, and I bought some grain really cheap a while ago. I just opened my flaked barley and it smells a little 'off.' Almost like the oils in the grain are starting to go rancid. (The rest of my grains are fine, though.) It's a bit too smelly to brew with, but will it be okay for...
It's worse than that it's DEAD, Jim.
Silkie died today. We're thinking the other chickens knew there was something wrong, and that's why she got pecked a month ago.
RIP Soup.
We're discussing silkie options for the spring. I kinda want to get show-grade from a breeder, rather than...
Hope you didn't spend too much.
I bought one of these from amazon for about $22. They don't have them anymore though.

It's a bit more expensive, but we get aspen bedding delivered by petfooddirect.com.
Is there a lumber mill/carpenter by you that you can buy woodchips?

We had a silkie get pecked last month. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=5035172) The bird has been in our spare bathtub for the past month, and is about healed. There's a few spots of dried blood on her feathers, and she STINKS. Not as bad as 5 chicks in the bathtub...
McGeary Organics layer pellets. Last time I bought a bag it was $21, and another $20 to ship it. GRRRRR.
If I could find organic food here in NYC I'd get it locally. I'm about to drive to PA and pick up three or four bags from McGeary this month.

I'm going to put a small aquarium heater in my water bucket this winter.
Probably something like this:

petfooddirect.com ships my aspen bedding every couple of months. The Lady pays for it, but I think it's about $10 per 4 CF, and with the 20% coupon the shipping is just about free.
I can go to Petco here in NYC and pay $18 for a bale if I need it in a hurry.

I'm pretty sure the cats wouldn't like that. Well, the would like it for about 2 minutes. Then I'd have to clean up the mess.
So has anyone built a coop for one banty? We have a space where the coop and run can be next to the old run, so the banty will be able to 'socialize' with...
