    Indentation/depression on chicken's chest

Hello...wondering if anyone has encountered anything like this. One of our Silver Grey Dorkings, 7 months old and healthy/laying, did not come into the coop one night about a week ago and was left in the yard overnight. This in itself was very unusual as she was usually right there on the...

Hen stopped laying; swelling below vent

Our two-year old Sussex stopped laying 1 1/2 to 2 weeks ago. She has continued to eat and peck in the yard; poop is normal. We thought she might be egg-bound and gave her a warm bath, and per info in one of our Storey books tried to feel for an egg to gently massage it towards the vent...

    Broken egg inside chicken?

Possibly. Except there was a couple of small pieces of shell stuck to feathers outside the vent--as if she had expelled a couple of pieces, but not all of it. She is still very lethargic, showing very little interest in anything.

    Broken egg inside chicken?

A question came up, while we are trying to help one of our girls with what is obviously a broken egg inside her. I have flushed the vent with a warm vinegar and water mixture, got some vaseline inside the vent, but . . . Try as I might, I could not feel anything even close to resembling shell...

    Pendulous crop?

Hi Ipana, Sussie looks great today. Everything back to normal. I've been going slowly with the crumbles but think that this evening she can go back in the coop with her girlfriends. We'll still hold off on scratch etc. for a few days and keep an eye on things. Thanks so much for your...

    Pendulous crop?

Hi Ipana, thanks for the good, cautious advice. I very much agree with the slow approach. Sussie is doing very well today. I felt her crop first thing this morning and while I'm not totally sure what "empty" feels like, being new to crop feeling, it was small and did not seem like there was...

    Pendulous crop?

Hi ipana, thanks for your informative post and the great links. I will definitely put together a crop tube but as I didn't think I could get the components today I decided that I'd better get Sussie to vomit again this morning. I had let her have access the regular feed, and was afraid she was...

    Pendulous crop?

We have four hens, 11 months old. One of them, a Speckled Sussex (Sussie), had what we believed was a crop problem in early December...she was bobbing her head and pulling her neck in, looked very uncomfortable. Crop was not hard or especially distended, but she did have watery diarrhea. We put...

Cluckingham Palace, finished in time for the new arrivals . . .

These pictures probably aren't as detailed as they should be, but they give you an idea. The rope for the door travels through the side of the structure, so it can be operated from the outside. There is a 3/8" dowel, about 8 inches long, that also extends through the side of the structure...

Question about bedding and composting . . .

I plan on composting the soiled bedding from my coop, but I have read that the LAST thing you want to put in your compost bin is wood shavings--it takes way too long to compost. So now I'm trying to decide whether to switch to straw--which I know is not the optimum bedding. Has anyone had any...

Cluckingham Palace, finished in time for the new arrivals . . .

Thank you, everyone, for the kind comments. And, no, I don't really have plans. It was a 'build-as-you-go' project, which--as they say in the workshop--involved several "opportunities to re-evaluate" my original design. The inside dimensions of the house are 45" x 33" by, as I recall, a...

Cluckingham Palace, finished in time for the new arrivals . . .

Finally finished our new girls' coop last weekend. The hardest part of the design was: I wanted a coop that was knock-down, that I could unassemble and reassemble at another location. It took two months to design and build, and about two hours to assemble, using furniture inserts...

    Pasting and . . . baking soda?

Well, thank you for the posts. I guess, since this is something that no one else has really heard about, I think I will give it a pass. I must admit, I wasn't very confident with this recommendation from the beginning, even though both the store owner and the vet tech talked about it. I mean...

    Pasting and . . . baking soda?

Getting ready to receive our first chicks, and the local feed store had a seminar on raising chicks. Brought in a vet tech, a rep from a feed company--it was all very interesting. But they mentioned something I have not read anyplace before, or seen anywhere in this forum: to help prevent...

New to group, question about roost height

I am trying to figure out how high my roost should be in the house I'm building, given it's size. This is a 'small' house, designed for 2 to 3 hens only. The interior floor space is 3 ft by 4 ft. If I attach the roost (rounded 2 x 4) approximately half-way from wall to wall lengthwise...
