is it good to feed chickens wheat?

I believe that variety is the spice of life. This goes for me, all my pets, including my flock. My hens get what I feed them. They always have access to pellets. They get fermented grains once a day and scratch in the morning. I feed them safe kitchen scraps that include vegetables, fruits and...

If feed stores closed and you can’t free range...

We are just coming out of winter here and there is very little growing that can be collected for our chickens. In the summer we do feed our chickens weeds (dirt clumps and all), grass clippings and vegetable scraps, etc.. We also feed fermented grain. Fermenting is a great idea. First thing is...

    Predatory chicken

Hi all, This is so strange and was wondering if anyone else has had this happen. One of my hens, Teri (she’s a Delaware), has started attacking and killing small birds and mice. Now I’ve had chickens kill mice before, but Teri will jump and pull sparrows right out of the air. She’s caught 3 in 2...

Sparrows in coop eating all my hen's food

I've been having quite a time wither English sparrows eating all my hens food. While I do feed the wild birds outside the coop, I'm not fond of them when there's 50 of them all in the coop feeding on the hen's food. I did solve this and thought maybe my solution would work for others. All I did...

Can't do that, I live in a city. We can only have so many chickens and never a rooster. While I did butcher chickens and other livestock when I was at the farm. I no longer want any part of that. So I would have no way of dealing with too many chickens or roosters. The girls are my pets and I...

Yes, I started fermenting grains. OMG does the flock love fermented grain. Teri stands guard over the uneaten grains trying to keep the sparrows from eating it. LOL. Henrietta has been trying as hard as she can to hatch a ceramic egg. Bless her heart for all the dedication, but there won't be a...

I was only about 12 when we had the leghorns, so do not remember, but I know none of them ever laid an egg, so that's possible. I do remember my father being interested in selling capons. What I do remember is being glad when it was over and the leghorns were butchered and gone.

I'm not really new to raising chickens, I grew up on a small family farm. We raised Rhode Island reds for egg production, about 150 chickens. Besides those we also kept assorted bantams, ducks, pigs, rabbits for meat and beef cattle. We also raised leghorns for meat production one year. The farm...
