Getting rid of smell on eggs...

Just started some craft projects with the quail eggs and now my hands stink. I have a pretty sensitive sense of smell and this smell is not pleasant. Anyone had any luck with certain washes? I washed these eggs with warm water and dish soap it helped but not nearly enough.

Housing and raising your mountain quail

I have long considered mountain quail and I think I will take the plunge next spring, but would like tips/tricks you have learned to keep your mountains happy and healthy. Also any photos of your housing set up would be appreciated!

    Pacific Northwest Swapping/Meetups

So I am hoping this will be allowed here, but was thinking it might be a nice place to get an idea of who is bringing what or who can bring what to the various shows and other meetups applicable to poultry in the PNW. I know we have the actual organized swaps - this would be more for those who...

Breeding birds with pinched tails.... everywhere?

I always like to browse through the hatching eggs for sale section, and also look at lots of the breed threads, even in breeds that aren't my own. I love learning about other breeds of poultry and finding out who has what, just in case I run across someone looking for them at a show or swap...

    Funky wing issue...

I'm posting this here because it's more of a genetic issue, I think, though it could be environmental if anyone can give some input? Just looking for answers on this one... ........... This is a purchased Dominique pullet, hatched April 18th. Not sure if photos will help, it's hard to...

Pullet with a funky wing.... Hmmm...

Not sure if the photos will help, it's hard to see, but very noticeable when you feel her. Instead of going out normally, her wing bends down at the elbow drastically, so it's almost pointed straight at the ground. Her right wing is severe, her left wing is the same way but much less so. She was...

I feel bad for the other breeds...

I always feel bad. I give little cockroach treats to the chickies, and I also give them stinkbugs if I find them (there have been a lot this year). Sadly, we have a mix of chicks - mostly Dominiques, a few Orpingtons and Orp Xs, a few Marans Xs and some Americaunas. The Dominiques ALWAYS get the...

Can you sticky? Some common management questions.

I see these questions come up again and again, so maybe if we could sticky this and others could add to it, it would help? Integrating new flock members If you have bought a new bird, PLEASE QUARANTINE!!! Once you have quarantined, add the bird(s) to the existing flock by first allowing the...

    Deep litter method for chicks?

I've been kind of experimenting with this and so far I love it. Of course, the little chooks don't stir in as much as they should, so I just go in once and a while and stir everything up. This has cut my cleanings from twice a week or so to every second or third week. I could probably go much...

    Mysterous Deaths...

Zero signs. Zero. Not a ruffled feather or a single sneeze. First victim, an EE bantam cockerel about 9mo died several months ago. Second, poor little Brutus, a little Serama cockerel today. Both were found dead after seeming to be totally healthy. No blood, no wounds, no weight loss, nothing...

Setting another four dozen today... anyone with me?

Have had the incubator fired up since last night. I always have to make adjustments since with all the chicky choos developing they sure make the temp go up - so when I go to set again, my temp is too low. When I checked this morning it was 95.7.. just waiting until it's perfect to stick these...

Heard about this show at Stevenson this weekend, I can probably forward your information to the organizers once I get info from them. I know Don Montgomery is helping organize, I can't for the life of me remember the name of the fellow in charge - has a beard, very.. lively.. Does that help...

    Some treadle feeder... feedback :D

Just wanted to let everyone know that I built a treadle feeder recently. The only downside is that the hole is too big, so my birds are scooching food out all over the place! I plan to modify the feeder. As it is right now, we just put a brick on it every few days and they clean up all the mess...

    Golden/Yellow/Manchurian/Fawn gene thoughts and questions...

Is it possible that those with surviving chicks from ManchurianxManchurian matings have the Y^f2, or fawn mutation, instead of or as well as the yellow (ie YY^f2 ...or... Y^f2Y^f2)? Does anyone have any information on this gene mutation pertaining Manchurians in the US? Any photos to compare...

Thinking of getting started with quail...

So these little buggars have caught my eye. I love the look of the Mountain Quail, but I keep reading how difficult they are to keep and I don't think I'd want to start out with something like that having never owned quail before. So instead I was thinking of Manchurian Coturnix. Any feedback on...
